TEMPORARY HOUSING FOR STUDENTS (13) At the meeting of the Board of Trustees on October 18, the President of the University was authorized "to take steps to procure trailers or other temporary housing." P u r s u a n t to this authorization, application was made to the National H o u s ing Agency through the Chicago Regional Office for an assignment of 275 portable houses now at Charlestown, Indiana. This application has been approved. Subsequently another application for 125 additional houses of the same type was made, and that is still pending. These houses are not trailers but are larger. Each unit has one or two bedrooms, a bathroom, and other built-in utilities. Some a r e furnished. T h e N H A has applications for such houses from educational institutions in other states which may affect the number ultimately allocated to the University of Illinois. T o secure these houses the University must execute a lease agreeing to pay a small rental to the Government, to pay the cost of transferring the houses from Charlestown, Indiana, to Urbana-Champaign, connecting them with the utilities, and otherwise setting them up for occupancy, and to rent them exclusively to veterans. T h e University will be permitted to charge sufficient rent for these houses to cover operating costs and to liquidate a part of the capital expense of acquisition. T h e University will not be responsible for any of the expense of removing the houses from Urbana-Champaign to another location. T h e Physical Plant Department estimates it will cost up to $2,000 a unit to

To be used for the preparation of plans and specifications. To be used for the construction and equipment of Power Plant Addition at UrbanaChampaign. * To be used for construction of Physics Research ^ Laboratory, $300,000; design and engineering work for the Betatron, $31,100; construction and installation of Betatron, $60,000; special tools and equipment for handling large vacuum tube development and large parts for Betatron, $35,000.
