H e has been on leave of absence without pay since January 16, 1943, for service with the Office of Production Research and Development of the W a r Production Board. In submitting his resignation P r o fessor Keyes stated that he was offered "an extremely attractive industrial position with a salary far beyond the scale paid at the University," and that although he had been looking forward with pleasure to returning to the University and supervising the design of the new Chemical Engineering Building, he felt that in justice to his family and his own future he could not refuse the offer. LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR PROFESSOR ROGER A D A M S

(3) As reported to the Board on August 29, 1945 (Minutes, page 619), Professor Roger Adams has been on leave of absence as Head of the Department of Chemistry, with pay, for services as a member of the National Defense Research Committee and Chairman of one of its divisions. Members of this Committee receive n o compensation from the Federal Government for their services. Professor Adams has been appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry and H e a d of the Department of Chemistry, on indefinite tenure, beginning September I, 1045, at a salary of $12,000 a year (on indefinite leave of absence as Head of the Department, with pay, for approved war w o r k ) . H e had previously expected to come back to his University work on October 1, and to go to Washington from time to time only when necessary; and he further expected to return to his duties full time by the opening of the second semester. H e has now been asked to undertake a six months' mission for the Government which would take him to Germany and would require him to be away until May, 1946. T h e senior staff members in the Department of Chemistry are reluctant to have him take on any obligations which would keep him away so much longer. After due consideration of all factors, Professor Adams has requested that he be permitted to accept the foreign mission provided he can return to the University on or about March I, 1046.
