(3) On March 20, 1043 (Minutes, page 313), the Board of Trustees authorized proceedings before the Illinois Commerce Commission to obtain a reduction in what appeared to be discriminatory freight rates charged by certain carriers for coal hauled to the University from the Danville area. On April 8, 1944 (Minutes, page 924), on recommendation of Judge Sveinbjorn Johnson, who had been handling this matter for the University, the Board retained the services of Mr. Nuel D. Belnap of Chicago as special counsel experienced in the technical aspects of freight rate litigation. Reports on the status of this case and the progress of proceedings were made to the Board on June I, 1944, and September 29, 1944 (Minutes, pages 961 and 217).
