LEAVES OF ABSENCE (3) A recommendation that the following leaves of absence be granted members of the staff for the reasons and periods and under the conditions indicated in each case, which are in accordance with the regulations of the Board governing such leaves: W . E. CARROLL, Professor of Swine Husbandry and Head of t h e Department of Animal Husbandry, leave without pay beginning August I, 1945, and continuing until August I, 1946 (provided leave may be terminated earlier if he is released), so that he may serve in establishing and supervising the educational work in Animal Husbandry and Dairying at one of the two United States Army University Study Centers abroad. MARY C. WHITLOCK, Assistant Professor of H o m e Economics, leave without pay for one year from September 1, 1945, for government service. S. H . M e y e r , these leaves w e r e g r a n t e d as r e c o m mended. LEAVE O F ABSENCE FOR PROFESSOR ROGER ADAMS (4) Since September 17, 1942, Professor Roger Adams has been on leave of absence as H e a d of the Department of Chemistry, with pay, for services as a member of t h e National Defense Research Committee and Chairman of one of the Divisions. Members of t h e Committee receive no compensation from the Federal Government for their services. T h e leave authorized by t h e Board of Trustees is "until further notice," but it is advisable to review such cases periodically. I recommend that Professor Adams be continued on leave as H e a d of the Department of Chemistry, with pay, for as much of the academic year beginning September I, 1945, as may be necessary, and have included this provision in the budget for next year. I further recommend that Professor William C. Rose be continued as Acting H e a d of t h e Department during that period. T h e University has not been without the services of Professor Adams altogether, for he has continued to supervise the training of graduate students in research and has been directing scientific investigations of his own.
