On motion of Mr. Karraker, this revised budget was approved for presentation to the State Department of Finance.

LEGAL S E R V I C E S O F J U D G E S V E I N B J O R N J O H N S O N (20) T h e Board of Trustees on September 29, 1944 (Minutes, page 227), authorized the employment of the services of Judge Sveinbjorn Johnson as special counsel for the University in t h e litigation in t h e Supreme Court on t h e attempt of the assessors of Champaign and Cunningham townships to assess the Men's Residence Halls and the Illini Union Building for general property taxes. T h e decision of the Supreme Court is given in t h e minutes of the meeting of N o vember 30, 1944 (page 295). Judge Johnson now renders a bill for $2480 for services in this matter (see below).

After discussion, and on motion of Dr. Meyer, this bill was ordered paid, and an appropriation of $2,480 for that purpose from the General Reserve Fund was made, by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Fornof, Mrs. Grigsby, Mr. Karraker, Mr. Livingston, Mr. McKelvey, Dr. Meyer, Mr. Nickell; no, none; absent, Mr. Davis, Mr. Green, Mr. Jensen, Dr. Luken.

University of Illinois, et al., in the Supreme Court of Illinois, No. 28276 This case tested t h e power of Champaign County to t a x t h e Union Building, the Men's Residence Halls, Illini Hall, and t h e Arcade properties. While the tax for t h e year 1942 alone was directly in issue, it was agreed that t h e decision would also dispose of the taxes for the years 1943 and 1044. T h e r e was at stake a sum of approximately $80,000. T h e r e were also at stake in this case certain principles of law of great i m portance to t h e University.
