RETIREMENT O F PROFESSOR J O H N S . KELLOGG (5) Dr. John S. Kellogg, Professor of Prosthetic Dentistry, has requested that he be retired from active service on September 1, 1945, for reasons of health. Doctor Kellogg will reach the age of 65 in April, 1945. T h e University Retirement System L a w provides that on attaining the age of 65 a member of t h e staff may retire for substantial cause on request and on certification of the University, and receive an annuity based upon the same formula as would apply in case of compulsory retirement at age 68. In his case this annuity will amount to 50 per cent of his Final Rate of Earnings as defined in the Retirement Act. I recommend approval of Doctor Kellogg's request, and that he be retired with the title of Professor of Prosthetic Dentistry, Emeritus, effective September

1, 1945-

On motion of Mrs. Grigsby, this recommendation was approved.

APPOINTMENT O F HENRY CLIFFORD HAWES TO BOARD O F EXAMINERS IN ACCOUNTANCY (6) T h e Committee on Accountancy recommends the appointment of Mr. H e n r y Clifford Hawes, of the firm of Lybrand, Ross Bros., and Montgomery, Chicago, as a member of t h e Board of Examiners in Accountancy for three years beginning July 1, 1944, to succeed Mr. Roy Andreae, whose term expired on June 30. O n m o t i o n of M r . M c K e l v e y , this a p p o i n t m e n t w a s m a d e a s r e c o m mended. LEAVES O F ABSENCE (7) A recommendation that the following leaves of absence be granted members of the staff for the reasons and periods and under the conditions indicated in each case, which a r e in accordance with the regulations of the Board governing such leaves. All the leaves of absence for illness or disability recommended here a r e for periods in whole or in part prior to September 1, 1944, when the new regulations of the Board of Trustees governing disability leaves become operative. In the future, leaves for which members of the staff a r e eligible under these new rules will not be reported to the Board unless some exception from these regulations is recommended. A record of all such leaves granted will be kept in the Business Office.

HAROLD CLAYTON M. CASE, P r o f e s s o r and Head of the Department of

Agricultural Economics, leave without pay from October I, 1944, through August 31, 1945, for services abroad for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. W . NORRIS WENTWORTH, Director of Residence Halls, leave without pay for six months from October 22, 1944, so that h e may serve as Director of Dormitories at a Government supervised w a r project at O a k Ridge, near Knoxville, Tennessee. Mr. Wentworth will be employed by a contractor w h o is operating certain facilities for the W a r Department in that area, but the request for his release from University service has come from the Army. GEORGE T. STAFFORD, Professor of Physical Education for Men, leave without pay for the first semester of 1944-1945 (September 1, 1944, through February 28, 1945), for service with the United States Navy in its rehabilitation program. ELMER J. WORKING, Professor of Agricultural Economics, leave without pay from September 1 through December 31, 1944, so that he may undertake studies relating to farm product prices, farm income, land values, and other factors bearing on policy with respect to farm mortgage loans. This is a direct service to agriculture and will be valuable experience to Professor W o r k i n g in his University work. H i s services will not be required in the teaching program at the University during his absence, and he has agreed to return to the University whenever occasion requires for supervision of research work which would normally be under his direction. T h e studies he is making a r e for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. CARL E. SCHUBERT, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, leave without pay for one year from September 1, 1944, so that he may accept a position as Manager of the Certified Core Oil and Manufacturing Company of Cicero, Illinois. H i s services a r e not required by the Department because of decreased enrollment.
