One I 2 " x 3 0 " Monarch lathe, one R D - i 175-5 W a l k e r - T u r n e r radial drill press, one #2 Brown & Sharpe milling machine, one # 2 M H Cincinnati milling machine, one 50-ton capacity Arbor press, one RD-1170 Walker-Turner radial drill press, one Model ML DoAll contour saw, and two # 1 5 Buffalo drill presses, for the Department of Physics, from the W a r Assets Corporation, St. Louis, at a cost of $5,554-31. 3. Twenty to twenty-five cars of IJ4" coal screenings (approximately 1,200 t o n s ) , for the Physical Plant Department, from the Consolidated Coal Company, St. Louis, at a cost of $3,840. 4. Eighty-five good two-year-old steers, for the Department of Animal Husbandry, to be selected by a representative of the department, at an estimated cost of $9,500. 5. Ten Aeronca Champion airplanes, for the Institute of Aeronautics, from Currey Flying Service, Galesburg, at a cost of $19,897.65. 6. One Kearney-Trecker milling machine, for the Department of Electrical Engineering, from the W a r Assets Corporation, St. Louis, at a cost of $1,883.29. 7. Pipe casing and filler pitch for use in extension of service lines to Betatron and Physics Research Laboratory, for the Physical Plant Department, from the General Meters & Controls Company, Chicago, at a cost of $3,324.08. 8. Approximately seventy cars of coal for use in the Abbott Power Plant, for the Physical Plant Department, as follows: from the Taylor-English Coal Company, $2,010; from the Globe Coal Company, Chicago, $1,550; from C. V. Beck & Company, Inc., St. Louis, $3,450; from the Haddaway Coal Company, St. Louis, $3,175;—or a total cost of $10,185. 9. One Worthington "Grass Blitzer," for use at the Airport, for the Institute of Aeronautics, from the Worthington Mower Company, Chicago, at a cost of

$1,872.20.

10. Fire insurance on the William Albert Noyes Laboratory of Chemistry— $59,648 on the building and $37,727 on the contents—for the Physical Plant Department, from the Century Insurance Company, George B. Franks, Agent, at a cost of $1,092.02 for a five-year premium. (All quotations received were at the same rates published by the Illinois Inspection Bureau. This is to replace a policy previously carried with the Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company, which has expired. T h e new policy is being placed in a stock company to keep the proper 75-25% stock and mutual relationship ratio.) 11. Trees for temporary housing sites, for the Physical Plant Department, from H e n r y Kohankie & Son, Painesville, Ohio, at a cost of $1,039. 12. One weapons carrier, 1941 Dodge, one-half t o n ; one ambulance, 1941 Dodge, one-half t o n ; one cargo truck, 1942 Chevrolet, 1^2 t o n ; for the Institute of Aeronautics, from the W a r Assets Administration, at a cost of $1,443.73.

On motion of Dr. Meyer, the action of the Comptroller in authorizing these purchases was approved and confirmed.

PURCHASES RECOMMENDED (23) T h e Purchasing Agent has proposed and the Comptroller recommends the following purchases. Unless otherwise specified the purchase in each case is recommended on the basis of lowest bid, ceiling price, or because the item is noncompetitive. I concur in the recommendations. 1. Two box-type electric furnaces, 10 K W , 230 volt, 60 cycle, 2,000° F. maximum working temperature, with Leeds & N o r t h r u p indicating pyrometers, for the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, from the Hevi Duty Electric Company, Milwaukee, at a cost of $1,602. 2. One toolroom, box-type tempering furnace, complete with controls, recording instruments, and accessories — 12" x 16" x 18" — 1,250° F. maximum operating temperature, for the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, from the Lindberg Engineering Company, Chicago, at a cost of $1,404.55. 3. Fifty new dental instrument cases, for the Student Supply Store, Chicago, from H. Gerstner & Sons, Dayton, Ohio, at a cost of $1,050. 4. One heavy-duty, oil-immersed, high-tension transformer, complete with auxiliary cameras, for the Department of Chemistry, from Hayes Scientific Appliances, Urbana, at a cost of $2,186.
