BOARD OF TRUSTEES

[November 18

It is proposed to install the equipment in the Abbott Power Plant. W h e n this plant was constructed provision was made for three turbo-generators, two of which are installed and space provided for a third for future expansion. Until funds are available for this third unit and it can be secured—and this will not be for another two years at least—the space may be used for other purposes. It is estimated that $18,000 will be needed to carry on Doctor Kerst's researches during the balance of the current biennium, or until August 31, 1043. This amount will be needed for the installation of the equipment being constructed by the General Electric Company, for supplies, and for salaries and wages of the staff. T h e budget of expenditures for this project is classified as follows: For 1941-1942: I. Capital investment (includes transformers, power lines, radiation shielding, M-G set, switch gear, temporary dark room, gas, air, water, etc.) for installation of electron accelerator in the Abbott Power Plant $ 4 400 II. Operation: Auxiliary experimental equipment I 000 Contingent fund I 000 III. Wages: One half-time assistant, 12 months 1 One full-time assistant, 8 months [ 4 350 One mechanician J IV. Traveling expense 300 V. Freight on lent equipment 200 Total for 1941-1943 $11 250 For 1942-1943: I. Operation: Experimental equipment $ 1 000 II. W a g e s : Same as above, except all for 12 months 5 250 I I I . W o r k on building plans and specifications for future quarters 500 Total for 1942-1943 $ 6 750 Total for Biennium $18 000 Eventually it will be necessary to move the electron accelerator from the Abbott P o w e r Plant to other quarters. Whether this will be necessary during the present biennium will depend on developments during the next six or eight months. On the basis of present estimates of the cost of equipment, materials, etc., the total cost of this project will amount to at least $45,000, of which $30,000 is now available. 1 I recommend (1) the appropriation of $18,000 from the General Reserve Fund, to be recouped from lapsed funds (including $6,000 from Graduate School Research F u n d ) , for the electron accelerator project for the current biennium, and (2) that the balance of $12,000 now available be earmarked for this purpose until March 1, 1042, pending further developments.
