PURCHASES RECOMMENDED (15) A recommendation that the following purchases be authorized: 1. 41 cast steel and bronze valves, for Physical Plant stock, from Jenkins Bros., Chicago, the lowest bidder, at a price of $1,291.47 f.o.b. Urbana. 2. One vacuum return line heating pump, for the Physical Plant Department, from C. A. Dunham Company, the lowest bidder, at a price of $1,410.70 f.o.b. Michigan City, Indiana, freight allowed. On motion of Dr. Meyer, these purchases were authorized as P U R C H A S E S AUTHORIZED (16) A report of the following purchases authorized by the President of the University in accordance with the University Statutes: 1. Trimmings for draperies for Illini Union Building, Ernst C. von Ammon, Chicago, the lowest bidder, at a price of $1,918.40. 2. Chemicals to be placed in stock in the General Chemical Storeroom for use of various departments, representing a year's supply of the items listed, from A. Daigger & Company J. T. Baker Chemical Company Coleman & Bell Company W. W. Welch Manufacturing Company Central Scientific Company E. H. Quotations were secured from all of these companies and orders were placed on the basis of the lowest prices, quality considered. A list of these items is included in the recommendation of the Comptroller and the Purchasing Agent which is being filed with the Secretary of the Board for record. 3. 543 feet of 12" double thick pipe covering for the New Power Plant from the Union Asbestos & Rubber Company, the lowest bidder, at a price of $1,157.68 f.o.b. Urbana. 4. Syracuse "Adobe Econorim" chinaware for Men's Residence Hall (approximately 523 dozen pieces) from E. A. Hinrichs & Company, Chicago, at a price of $1,407. This is approximately $75 over the lowest bid which was on Shenango china. After careful comparison of the Shenango and the Syracuse it was decided that the Syracuse would be preferable because of more satisfactory color, sizes, and designs of the various pieces. 5. 15 rolls (60 square yards each) Armstrong's Brown Linoleum 3/16" thick by 6'o" wide, for Physical Plant Department stock, from F . K. Robeson, Champaign, the lowest bidder, at a price of $1.39 a square yard, or a total approximate cost of $1,251 f.o.b. Urbana. 6. Bed linen for the residence halls—103^ dozen bed sheets, 63" x 108"; and 77J4 dozen pillow cases to match sheets, 45" x 36"—from H . W . Baker Linen Company, New York City, the lowest bidder, at a total price of approximately $1,534-50.

On motion of Mr. Fornof, the action of the President of the University in authorizing these purchases was approved and confirmed.

OPERATION OF COLLEGE OF MEDICINE ON A T W E L V E - M O N T H BASIS (17) T h e Executive Council of the Association of American Medical Colleges has recommended that member institutions consider the following specific suggestions designed to increase the number of graduates from medical schools in order to meet more effectively the medical needs of the national emergency, without lowering the standards of medical education: (1) an increase in the
