LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR PROFESSOR FRANCIS P. SHEPARD (2) During the two academic years, 1939-1941, Professor Francis P . Shepard of the Department of Geology and Geography has been granted a leave of absence without pay for two semesters (from February, 1040, to February, 1041) for the purpose of conducting investigations in submarine geology on the Pacific Coast in which he has been interested and has been specializing for several years. H e has been assisted in his researches by the Geological Society of America and by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. T h e H e a d of the Department of Geology and Geography, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Dean of the Graduate School all recommend continuation of this arrangement during the two years beginning September 1, 1041, specifically a leave of absence without pay for the second semester of 1941-1942 and the first semester of 1042-1943, or from February 1, 1942, to February I, 1043. This plan has worked out satisfactorily in the past, since it has enabled him to teach all his advanced classes in the department, giving up only work in the elementary course for which temporary provision is made within the funds released by the unused half of his salary. I concur in this recommendation. LEAVES OF ABSENCE (3) A recommendation that the following leaves of absence be granted members of the staff for the reasons and periods and under the conditions indicated in each case: E. E. King, Professor of Railway Civil Engineering, sick leave with full pay for six months from March 1, 1941. Sylvia Shaver, Library Assistant in the O r d e r Department, two months' leave of absence, December, 1940, and January, 1941, without pay, because of illness. She was previously allowed a month's sick leave, in addition to the two weeks' sick leave allowed by the Civil Service Commission, with pay. W. M. Wilson, Research Professor of Structural Engineering, leave with pay for a period of ten days from April 26. This is in connection with his services on the Board of Engineers which was appointed to determine the loss resulting from the failure of the suspension bridge over the Tacoma N a r r o w s near Seattle. C. R. Anderson, Associate Professor of English, sick leave with full pay for one month from April 2. C. L. Metcalf, Professor of Entomology and H e a d of the Department, sick leave with full pay for one month from April 8, 1941. Leaves of Absence for Military Service ( T h e leave in each case is without salary.) Manning Seil, Associate in Journalism, one year from March 13, 1941. Tell Nelson,* Associate in Medicine, March 15 through August 31, 1941. Wesley E. Peltzer, First-Year Resident in Pediatrics, April 1 through June

C U R R I C U L U M IN VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE (4) T h e University Senate recommends approval of the following new curriculum in Vocational Agriculture. Up to the present time students training for Vocational Agriculture have been enrolled in the General Agriculture curriculum. T h e results have not been entirely satisfactory because the curriculum is too general and too flexible. T h e large amount of elective freedom allowed in the curriculum has resulted in many prospective teachers concentrating in one field and neglecting other fields
