MESSAGE FROM ILLINOIS EDUCATION ASSOCIATION C O N C E R N I N G SUMMER SESSION FEES (12) T h e following letter has been received from the Illinois Education Association: Springfield, Illinois February 8, 1941 President Arthur Cutis Willard University of Illinois Urbana, Illinois

DEAR S I R :

T h e Board of Directors of the Illinois Education Association at its last meeting directed me to file with the University of Illinois Board of Trustees its objections to the recently authorized increase in summer tviition fees to be exacted from teachers attending your summer session. It was the feeling of the Board that many teachers with low salaries, now obliged by a new school recognition system to gain additional college credits, would find it inconvenient if not impossible to pay the higher fees at the University of Illinois, and that they would therefore attend other institutions. F u r t h e r more, it was felt that those already entered upon studies leading to higher degrees at the University of Illinois should not be called upon to meet higher tuition fees. I respectfully request you to convey this message to your Board of Trustees. Sincerely yours,

IRVING F . PEARSON

SUMMER SESSION FEES (13) The Dean of the College of Education recommends that the Board consider waiving the increase in Summer Session fees recently ordered, in the case of teachers in the public schools of Illinois who have already begun work towards either baccalaureate or advanced degrees by attending Summer Sessions at the University of Illinois, until the summer of 1045, unless requirements for the degree for which the student is registered are completed before that date and the candidate wishes to work for an advanced degree. A copy of his letter is hereby given to the Secretary of the Board for record. T h i s report w a s received for record. At t h i s p o i n t , D r . UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS (14) On September 27, 1940 (Minutes, page 45), the Board adopted certain recommendations of its Special Committee on Fees and Scholarships, which included the following: "4. Ten scholarships to be known as 'University Scholarships' shall be established." This was based on a recommendation made by the Faculty Committee on Fees and Scholarships in its report previously submitted to the Board of Trustees, which included a statement of the conditions which the committee recommended govern the awarding of scholarships created by the Board of Trustees.
