APPROPRIATION OF RESIDENCE HALLS RESERVE (10) T h e Comptroller reports a balance in the Women's Residence Halls reserve of $27,429, as of June 30, 1940, and recommends that this amount be now appropriated for the construction of the Men's Residence Hall.

On motion of M r s . Plumb, this appropriation was made as recommended, by t h e following vote: Aye, M r . A d a m s , M r . Cleary, M r . Jensen, M r . Mayer, M r s . Plumb, M r . Pogue, M r . Williamson; no, n o n e ; absent, M r . H o r n e r , M r . K a r r a k e r , D r . Meyer, M r . Wieland.

CHANGE IN STATUS OF DIRECTOR LAWRENCE W . MURPHY (11) Director and Professor Lawrence W . Murphy of the School of Journalism has requested that because of his health he be relieved of the directorship of the School of Journalism and continued as Professor of Journalism on indefinite tenure. During the past two years, his health has not been good and he feels the need of this change as well as a desire to devote more time to teaching and research. Hence he has submitted his formal resignation as Director as of June 25 and suggests that the change in administration of the School be made immediately. I recommend t h a t : 1. Professor Murphy's resignation as Director be accepted effective July 1, 1940. 2. H e be continued as Professor of Journalism on indefinite tenure at a salary of $5,500 for the year 1940-1941. 3. T h e President of the University be authorized to appoint an "Administrative Committee" to administer the affairs of the School until the appointment of a new director. In view of the informal discussion of this matter on June 28, I informed Director Murphy that he might, if he wished, appear before the Board today and make any statement he desired to make. Director Murphy expressed a wish to avail himself of this opportunity and accordingly he is here, and I request that he be heard.

President Pogue introduced Director Murphy, who stated that he appeared of his own volition, t h a t he h a d offered his resignation in good faith and for a number of reasons, including his health. On request of members of the Board, Director M u r p h y amplified his reasons for submitting his resignation, again stated that he had resigned in good faith, and that he left the matter in the hands of the Board, a n d withdrew. After discussion, and on motion of M r . Jensen, Director M u r p h y ' s resignation as Director of the School of Journalism was accepted, effective July 1, 1940, a n d he was continued as Professor of Journalism as recommended by the President. T h e President advised the Board that unless there w a s objection the School would be administered as in item 3 above for the coming year.
