BOARD OF TRUSTEES

[January 22

M E E T I N G O F T H E E X E C U T I V E COMMITTEE

JANUARY 22, 1941

The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois met at the Medical Building, in Chicago, at 10 o'clock a.m. on Wednesday, January 22, 1941, during a recess in the meeting of the Board. Mr. Harold Pogue, Chairman, and Mr. James M. Cleary, member of the Executive Committee, were present; also the members of the Board and officers named above.

MATTERS PRESENTED BY PRESIDENT WILLARD

T h e Executive Committee considered the following matters presented by the President of the University.

CHANGE IN STATUS OF PROFESSOR A. E. MURPHY (1) A recommendation that the status of Professor A. E. Murphy, H e a d of the Department of Philosophy, be changed to one-half time at a salary of $1,625 for the second semester of 1040-1941, or for six months from February I, 1941. Professor Murphy wishes to devote a part of his time during the second semester to the writing of a book. T h e teaching from which he will be relieved will be taken over by Dr. T. V. Smith, who has been appointed Visiting Professor of Philosophy. O n m o t i o n of M r . C l e a r y , t h i s r e c o m m e n d a t i o n w a s a p p r o v e d . APPOINTMENT OF PROFESSOR FLORIAN ZNANIECKI (2) T h e Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences recommends the appointment of Dr. Florian Znaniecki, now Visiting Professor of Sociology, as Professor of Sociology, for one year from September 1, 1941, at a salary of $5,000, with the understanding that this appointment may be renewed from year to year, but with the condition, agreed to by Professor Znaniecki, that he will not be eligible to participate in the present retirement system because of his age. I concur in this recommendation. O n m o t i o n of M r . C l e a r y , t h i s a p p o i n t m e n t w a s m a d e a s r e c o m mended. APPOINTMENT OF MISS IRENE PIERSON AS SOCIAL DIRECTOR OF THE ILLINI U N I O N BUILDING (3) T h e Director of the Physical Plant Department recommends, and the Dean of Women concurs, that Miss Irene Pierson, now Assistant Dean of Women, be appointed Social Director of the lllini Union Building and Assistant Dean of Women from January 22 to August 31, 1041, at an annual salary rate of $3,300. I concur in this recommendation. O n m o t i o n of M r . C l e a r y , t h i s a p p o i n t m e n t w a s m a d e a s r e c o m mended. RECALL TO ACTIVE SERVICE OF PROFESSOR B. SMITH HOPKINS (4) Under the University Statutes, Professor B. Smith Hopkins, of the Department of Chemistry, is due to retire September 1, 1941. H e has been in the service of the University twenty-eight years. T h e Statutes provide that members of the staff who are retired shall be subject to call by the Board of Trustees for the performance of such specific duties for the University as shall be assigned to them by the President of the University. Professor Hopkins has been in charge of the organization of the course in Physical Science in the General Division of the College of Liberal A r t s and Sciences. H e is the best man in the Department of Chemistry to inaugurate this c o u r s e ; in fact, there is no one else in the department qualified to take it over. Under these circumstances the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has recommended that Professor Hopkins be continued in active service, on onefourth time, for the specific purpose of carrying on the work of the newly
