RECOMMENDATION O F T H E UNIVERSITY PATENT COMMITTEE

( 0 The University Patent Committee submits, with the concurrence of % Chairman of the University Research Board and the President of the University a recommendation relating to an invention described as: polymers with fi5«j ring recurring units —Carl S. Marvel, Research Professor of Organic Chemistn and Robert Z. Greenley, Research Assistant in Chemistry, inventors. It has Wj discovered that cyclic dienes may be polymerized by a reaction involving transannular polymerization to yield polymers which contain fused ring recurtim. units. This is a new kind of high molecular weight material which has never boa polymerized before and has applicability for use in development of plastics, rubber, and synthetic fibers. The Committee recommends that the invention be released to the Universit; of Illinois Foundation for development with the stipulation that the rights of the United States Air Force, sponsoring agency of the research which led to thii invention, be recognized. On motion of Mr, Clement, this recommendation was approved.

MEMORANDUM O F UNDERSTANDING OR INTENT CONCERNING A SITE FOR T H E CHICAGO BRANCH OF T H E UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

(2) At the request of President David D- Henry, Director C. S. Havens reporw on the present status of negotiations with the city of Chicago and the Chicasi. Land Clearance Commission for the acquisition of the Harrison-Hatsted Stre* area for the Chicago Undergraduate Division. He presented preliminary drafts of a proposed letter to the Executive Director of the Chicago Land Clearance Commission, and Memorandum of Understanding or Intent Concerning a Site i« the Chicago Branch of the University of Illinois which is being developed as a n interim document preliminary to the drafting of a contract. He stated that it is necessary to advise the city of Chicago of the University's (i.e., the Board t.: Trustees of the University of Illinois) views on the terms under negotiations that the city on its part may proceed with certain necessary steps including (lit passage of an ordinance which is scheduled for consideration by the City Council on March 22, 1%1. Legal Counsel Lesemann supplemented the report by Mr. Havens by discussing the legal aspects of the interim document and the contract to be develojieJ in the light of continuing negotiations. On motion of Mr, Johnston, the Board approved the preliminary drafts of the documents as presented, and authorized the appropriate University officials to prepare final drafts and to submit them to the Mayor of Chicago and to the Chicago Land Clearance Commission,

TEMPORARY FOOD SERVICE FACILITIES FOR ORCHARD DOWNS HOUSING

A meeting of the Committee on Buildings and Grounds had been scheduled for today for consultation on temporary food service facilities for the Orchard Downs housing. Since time did not permit a Committee meeting, the President requested the Board to receive i report on this matter from Mr. Vernon L. Kretschmer, Director O L Auxiliary Services. Mr. Kretschmer presented a proposal for the construction of a temporary food service facility in the area of the Orchard Dowif Apartments to provide food service for unmarried students who wJ i be housed in these apartments until additional residence halls can I* constructed to accommodate them. Funds will be advanced fr*i Housing Division surplus and reserve accounts to finance this facility and will be repaid from the net revenue of food service operation'
