The Board took up consideration of the following reports and recommendations from the President of the University.

APPOINTMENTS TO T H E FACULTY

(1) The following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. 1 WALTER J. BOCK, Assistant Professor of Zoology, beginning September 1, ' 1961, at an annual salary of $7,000 (B). 2 YELLAPPA C. DAS, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, one year from * September 1, 1961, at a salary of $6,600 (D). 3 JOZEF DELEY, Visiting Professor of Microbiology, four months from Febru' a ry 1, 1961, at a salary of $7,000 (G). 4. ROBERT C. DRYE, Ciinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, College of Medicine, beginning February 1, 1961, without salary (DY). 5, MILTON EDELMAN, Visiting Associate Professor in the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations, two months from June 16, 1961, at a salary of $3,200 (G). 6, ERWIN GROSSMANN, Lecturer with rank of Assistant Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, College of Medicine, beginning January 1, 1961, on onetenth time, at an annual salary of $900 (DY10). 7, R. S. JULIAN HAWES, Visiting Associate Professor of Zoology, for the academic year 1961-62, at a salary of $10,000 ( E ) . 8. THEODORE A. KIERSCH, Associate Professor of Hygiene and Chairman of the Mental Health Division, in the Health Service, beginning September 1, 1961, it an annual salary of $16,000 (BY). 9. GEORGE H. KLUMPNEE, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, beginning February 1, 1961, without salary (DY). 10. OWEN G. MCDONALD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery, College of Medicine, beginning February 1, 1961, without salary (DY). 11. JOHN R. PHILIP, visiting Professor of Petroleum Engineering, Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, for two and one-half months from February 16, 1961, at a salary of $3,000 (G). 12. WINION SOLBERG, Visiting Professor of History, for the academic year 1961-62, at an annual salary of $11,500 (E). 11 GEORGE WICKSTEAD, Visiting Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture, Department of City Planning and Landscape Architecture, for the second semester of 1960-61, on one-third time, at a salary of $1,765 (E33). Appointments to Nonacademic Staff The Director of Nonacademic Personnel reports the following appointments to supervisory positions of upper-level responsibility. 1. VICTOR A. ABELL, Computer Programmer I, Statistical Service Unit, beginning February 1, 1961, at an annual salary of$4,800. 2. GEORGE DODSON, Assistant Tabulating Machine Supervisor, Statistical Service Unit, beginning February 1, 1961, at an annual salary of $4,800, 3. RICHARD A, MARTIN, Purchasing Assistant II, Purchasing Division, Business Office, beginning January^ 1, 1961, at an annual salary of $6,600. 4. CAHOL A. MCCOLLOM, Dietitian, Research and Educational Hospitals, beginning January 4, 1961, at an annual salary of $4,500. On motion of Mr. Harewood, these appointments were confirmed.

CHAIRMANSHIP O F THE DEPARTMENT O F ARCHITECTURE

(2) Professor Alan K. Laing, who has been serving as Chairman of the Department of Architecture since 1954, has asked to be relieved of this administrative assignment at the end of the current academic year, so that he may devote full time torse teaching and hts own research, and I have approved his request.
