product was immersed in a calcium chloride solution which caused an almost instantaneous exchange of the calcium with the sodium in the alginate. The resulting coating was firm and the coated product could be handled immediately. T h e Committee recommends that the rights of the University be assigned to the University of Illinois Foundation for further development and possible patent application. 6. Ferromagnetic shielding enhancer — David Cohen, Associate Professor of Physics at Chicago Circle, inventor. It has been known that the application of an oscillating magnetic field inside ferromagnetic material increases the permeability, and can, under certain conditions of periodicity and intensity, raise the permeability to the "ideal magnetization curve." This present invention is applying this principle to magnetic shielding in the following w a y : a toroid, say, is wrapped around a cylindrical, uncapped shield, and a.c. passed through the toroid; the shielding efficiency of the cylinder is then increased because the effective permeability is greater, for mag. frequencies less than the exciting a.c. frequency. The Committee recommends assignment of the rights of the University to the University of Illinois Foundation for further study, development, and possible patent application. 7. Water-soluble Dichloro-s-triazinyl agents for the therapy of burns and other conditions of the skin and corium •— Philip P. Goland, Research Associate in Orthodontics at the Medical Center, and Floyd J. Green, of the Department of Orthodontics at the Medical Center, inventors; developed under a contract with the Institutum Divi Thomae. Experiments show reactive dichloro-s-triazinyl crosslinking agents can readily establish polymeric products with the superficial layers of the skin and corium where these are pathologically involved or denuded as in bums. These reactive agents become an integral part of the structure of the tissue molecules and help to stabilize these structures, preventing further disintegration and necrosis. It was found that the homeostatic mechanisms are aided by the establishment of these cross-linked polymeric products preventing the loss of capillary fluids. In addition, these agents have bacteriocidal and bacteriostatic properties and are thus of aid in prevention or ameliorating established infection. The Committee recommends assignment of the rights of the University to the University of Illinois Foundation, subject to the rights of the Institutum Divi Thomae and with the negotiation of equitable contracts recognizing such rights. 8. Optically excited thin platelet lasers — Nick Holonyak, Jr., Professor of Electrical Engineering, and Murray D. Sirkis, Professor of Electrical Engineering, inventors; developed under a contract with the United States Air Force and the Advanced Research Projects Agency. By optical excitation (optical pumping) thin semiconductor platelets are made to operate as lasers either by photon amplification along the surface of a platelet Or by photon amplifications through the thickness dimension of the platelet. The latter is potentially more important since it leads to an ultra small volume laser with potential application to holography. The Committee recommends assignment to the University of Illinois Foundation of the rights of the University, subject to recognition of the rights of the sponsoring agencies. 9. Flexible surface disc for multi-transducer computer controlled audio record and playback devices — Brian W. Voth, Research Engineer at Coordinated Science Laboratory, inventor; developed under a contract with the United States Army Electronics Command and the Advanced Research Projects Agency through the Office of Naval Research. This device consists of a disc of novel design which has a flexible, air supported surface. It is to be used primarily in multi-head, contact type magnetic audio records and playback devices. The unique feature of the disc is its flexible, air supported surface which permits the use of stiffly suspended, contact type transducer heads by virtue of its ability to accommodate small irregularities in head-to-disc spacing arising from variations in disc flatness, flexible surface flatness, or alignment of heads. T h e Committee recommends assignment to the University of Illinois Foundation of the rights of the University, subject to recognition of the rights of the sponsoring agencies. 10. Log periodic dipole, folded dipole, monopole, and slot arrays fed by a pair of coupled transmission lines which form a log-periodic scaled directional coupler — Paul G.
