17. ROBERT L. TAYLOR, Director of Computing, Graduate College, and Professor of Mathematics, Chicago Circle, beginning January 23, 1967, at an annual salary of $24,000 (BY; A ) .

On motion of Mr. Swain, these appointments were confirmed.

HEADSHIP OF DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY, URBANA (5) The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Urbana recommends the appointment of Professor Edward M. Bruner, presently Acting Head of the Department of Anthropology, as Head of the Department beginning September 1, 1967, at an annual salary of $20,000, on an academic year basis, divided: $19,000 as Professor of Anthropology, on indefinite tenure, and $1,000 as Head of the Department. Professor Bruner will succeed Professor Joseph B. Casagrande who asked to be relieved of this administrative duty effective September 1, 1967, so that he could devote full time to teaching and research. The nomination of Professor Bruner was made with the advice of a search committee1 and after consultation with the members of the Department of professorial rank, and is supported by the Executive Committee of the College, the Dean of the Graduate College, and the Executive Vice-President and Provost. I recommend approval.

On motion of Mr. Clement, this appointment was approved.

HEADSHIP OF DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY, URBANA

(6) The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Urbana, recommends the appointment of Professor John B. Hanson as Head of the Department of Botany, beginning September 1, 1967, at an annual salary of $23,000, on a twelve months' service basis, divided: $21,500 as Professor of Plant Physiology in the Department of Botany and in the Department of Agronomy, on indefinite tenure, and $1,500 as Head of the Department of Botany. This appointment is to succeed Professor John R. Laughnan who asked to be relieved of this administrative assignment as of August 31, 1965. Professor James F. Nance has been serving as Acting Head. The nomination of Professor Hanson is made with the advice of a search committee 2 and is supported by the faculty of the Department of Botany, the Executive Committees of the School of Life Sciences, and of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Dean of the Graduate College, and the Executive VicePresident and Provost. CHAIRMANSHIP OF DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE, URBANA

(7) The Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts at Urbana recommends the appointment of Professor Barnard W . Hewitt as Professor, on indefinite tenure, and Chairman of the Department of Theatre, on 67 per cent time, for two years, beginning September 1, 1967, on an academic year service basis. Professor Hewitt will continue in the Department of Speech in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, on indefinite tenure, on 33 per cent time. The salary will be determined when the budget for 1967-68 is submitted to the Board for approval. The establishment of a Department of Theatre in the College of Fine and Applied Arts was approved by the Board of Trustees on April 19, 1967, at which time the Trustees also approved the transfer of the "performance" functions of the Department of Speech and Theatre (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences) to the College of Fine and Applied Arts. The faculty members affected have voted in favor of a department with a chairman as the administrative officer.
