has received the approval of the Chicago Circle Senate, and the Senate Coordinating Council has indicated that no other Senate jurisdiction is involved. The Executive Vice-President and Provost and the Dean of the Graduate College concur in this recommendation. T h e University's location in the heart of metropolitan Chicago offers a great variety of opportunities for research in urban sociology, collective behavior, and minority group relations. T h e degree will be offered in general sociology, but areas of specialization for research experience will be medical sociology, urban sociology, and political sociology. This program is expected to prepare sociologists with research training for research in welfare and planning agencies and for teaching in junior colleges and universities. T o be admitted to candidacy for the master's degree in sociology, a student should meet the following objective standards: 1. An undergraduate grade-point average of 4.00 (i.e., a " B " average). 2. Graduate Record Examination scores on the two general scales (i.e., verbal and quantitative) above the seventieth percentile. Degree requirements will b e : 1. The candidate will be required to complete a minimum of forty-eight quarter hours of graduate study distributed as follows : a. Twelve hours in Sociology 400, 401, and 402, Theory and Method in Sociology. b. Eight hours in Sociology 499, Thesis Research. c. Twenty-eight additional quarter hours or the equivalent in course work at the 300 and 400 levels, at least sixteen of which must be in sociology. The remaining twelve may be taken in sociology or in related fields. 2. The candidate must satisfactorily pass a comprehensive examination to be administered by the Department which will normally be taken after three quarters of residence. T h e examination will cover theory and method in each of the major subfields: social psychology, social organization, demography and human ecology. 3. The candidate must satisfactorily complete a thesis. I recommend approval subject to further action by the Board of Higher Education.

On motion of Mr. Swain, this recommendation was approved.

ESTABLISHMENT OF MAJOR IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING, CHICAGO CIRCLE (18) T h e Chicago Circle Senate has approved a joint recommendation of the Department of Chemistry, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the College of Engineering for the establishment of a major field of concentration in chemical engineering (with emphasis in chemistry and energy engineering courses) as a part of the engineering curriculum. The program, in common with those curricula for the Bachelor of Science in engineering at Chicago Circle approved by the Board of Trustees on July 27, 1966, will consist of the common core curriculum of 111 quarter h o u r s ; a minimum of 36 hours in the major field; humanities-social sciences; and elective courses — for a minimum total of 198 quarter hours, exclusive of physical education and basic military science. It is anticipated that this program will prepare the student either for further graduate study or for employment upon graduation. T h e Chancellor and the Executive Vice-President and Provost endorse the recommendation. T h e Senate Coordinating Council has indicated that no further Senate jurisdiction is involved. I recommend approval subject to further action by the Board of Higher Education.

On motion of Mr. Grimes, this recommendation was approved.
