BOARD OF TRUSTEES

HEADSHIP OF DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY IN THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE (5) The Dean of the College of Medicine and the Chancellor for the Medical Center recommend the appointment of Dr. Lloyd M. Nyhus as Warren H . Cole Professor of Surgery on indefinite tenure and Head of the Department, beginning March 1, 1967, at an annual salary of $37,000 on a twelve months' service basis. Dr. Nyhus, presently Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington, will be the first Warren H . Cole Professor of Surgery. This appointment is to fill the vacancy created by the retirement on September 1, 1966, of Professor Cole. In the meantime Dr. Stuart S. Roberts has been serving and will continue to serve as Acting Head of the Department until February 28, 1967. The nomination for this appointment was initiated by a search committee 1 after consultation with all members of the department of professorial rank. The Dean of the Graduate College and the Executive Vice-President and P r o vost concur. I recommend approval.

On motion of Mr. Dilliard, this appointment was approved.

HEADSHIP OF DEPARTMENT OF ORAL PATHOLOGY IN THE COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY (6) The Dean of the College of Dentistry and the Chancellor at the Medical Center recommend the appointment of Dr. John Percival Waterhouse, presently on the staff of the London Hospital Medical College Dental School, London, England, as Professor of Oral Pathology on indefinite tenure and Head of the Department, in the College of Dentistry, beginning July 1, 1967, at an annual salary of $19,000 on a twelve months' service basis. Professor Joseph P. Weinmann served as Head of the Department from 1950 until his death in 1960. Professor Herman Medak has been serving as Acting Head of the Department. Dr. Waterhouse was nominated by a search committee, 1 and his appointment is endorsed by all members of the department of professorial rank. The Dean of the Graduate College and the Executive Vice-President and Provost concur in this recommendation. I recommend approval.

On motion of Mrs. Watkins, this appointment was approved.

CHANGE IN ORGANIZATION AND APPOINTMENT OF HEAD OF DEPARTMENT OF GERMANIC LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES. URBANA (7) The members of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures of professorial rank at Urbana-Champaign have voted to request a change in departmental organization from that of a department with a chairman to that of a department with a head. With the concurrence of the Executive Committee of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Dean of the College recommends that the form of organization requested be approved and that Professor Harry G. Haile, currently Chairman of the Department, be appointed Head of the Department. The Executive VicePresident and Provost also concurs. I recommend approval of these changes, to become effective September 1, 1967.

On motion of Mr. Jones, these recommendations were approved.

Laskin, Clinical Professor of Surgery, College of Medicine, and Professor of Oral Surgery and Associate Head of the Department, Chairman; Hubert R. Catchpole, Research Professor of Pathology, College of Medicine; Stanley J. Gerson, Assistant Professor of Oral Pathology; James A. Yaeger, Professor of Histology and Head of the Department.
