ing their language competence and allowing them to gain insight into French culture. In addition, students -will take occasional field trips to places of cultural and historical importance. Instruction at Grenoble and Rouen will be by French professors, through agreements executed with the Universities of Grenoble and Rouen. A member of the Urbana-Champaign faculty will be present with the group as Program Director and will insure the quality of the instruction. Those who successfully complete the year's program will be granted a full academic year of credit (thirty semester hours) at an advanced undergraduate level at their respective universities. The work would receive full credit towards the students' degrees. Costs of instruction will not exceed those at the Urbana-Champaign campus insofar as the expenditure of state funds is concerned. Transportation of staff and other instructional and operational costs of the program will be paid from non-state funds. Students will incur approximately the same living costs as they presently do at the Urbana-Champaign campus, plus travel and personal expenses. The total estimated cost for each student, including transportation, room and board, and tuition and fees is approximately $1,800. The Chancellor at the Urbana-Champaign campus and the Executive VicePresident and Provost concur in this recommendation. It is further recommended that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board of Trustees be authorized to execute such contracts as may be necessary to implement this program. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Jones, this program was authorized as recommended.

PROGRAM FOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN COLLABORATION WITH PRINCETON UNIVERSITY, URBANA (15) Princeton University has submitted a proposal for a Princeton-Illinois collaboration on a continuing basis for archaeological research in Sicily at the site oi theyiefieriislic-Roman City of Morgantina. The. pioj»s.aS provides that Princeton wi55 contribute to this joint venture by securing concession rights for the excavations from the Italian government and ceding to the expedition all the material goods and equipment which it possesses in Morgantina and Aidone. T h e value of this material and equipment is estimated at $10,000. The University of Illinois will have the privilege of nominating the field director and will undertake the organi2ation and financing oi the expedition. For the year 1968 the expeditionary party will consist of a field director, two graduate students to be nominated by Princeton "University, iour graduate students to be nominated by the University of Illinois, and some thirty-five supporting personnel. It is anticipated that the work of the expedition in 1068 will take place during the summer months. The total cost of the project to the University of Illinois for the 1968 expedition is not expected to exceed $15,600. The six graduate students involved will be supported by grants from outside sources. Funds are available from Contracts Research Reserve. The project has been approved by the University Research Board. The President recommends, with the concurrence of the Chancellor at Urbana and the Executive Vice-President and Provost, that this joint venture with Princeton. University be approved and that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board oi Trustees be authorized to execute such documentation and enter into such contracts as may be necessary to implement the program within the budget limitations outlined above.

On motion of Mr. Clement, this recommendation was approved.

RENAMING OF W O M E N ' S GYMNASIUM, URBANA (16) Upon recommendation of the Department of Physical Education for Women, the Dean of the College of Physical Education, and the Chancellor at the Urbana campus, I recommend that the Women's Gymnasium on the Urbana campus be renamed Freer Gymnasium. The late Miss Freer, who died Septmber 20, 2966, headed the Department of Physical Education for Women for thirty-four years, from 1915 to her retirement in 1949. Miss Freer initiated courses in modern, dance and vras instrumental in
