the appointment of Professor Rita J. Simon, presently Professor of Sociology and Research Professor of Communications, as Head of the Department of Sociology beginning with the second semester of 1968-69 on a nine-month service basis, at an annual salary of $17,600. Professor Simon will continue to hold the rank of Professor on indefinite tenure. Professor Simon will succeed Professor Daniel Glaser who resigned as of September 1, 1968. Professor J. E. Hulett, Jr. has been serving as Acting Head. The nomination of Professor Simon was made with the advice of a search committee 1 and is supported by the Executive Committee of the College, the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Chancellor at Urbana, and the Dean of the Graduate College at Urbana. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Jones, this appointment was approved.

HEADSHIP OF T H E DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY, URBANA (8) The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Urbana, recommends the appointment of Professor Robert L. Metcalf, presently Professor of Entomology, as Professor of Entomology and of Zoology on indefinite tenure and Head of the Department of Zoology beginning with the second semester of 1968-69 on a nine-month service basis, at an annual salary of $29,000. This appointment is to succeed Professor Paul H . Silverman who asked to be relieved of this administrative assignment as of August 31, 1968. Professor David L. Nanney has been serving as Acting Head. The nomination of Professor Metcalf was made with the advice of a search committee2 and is supported by the Executive Committee of the College, the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Chancellor at Urbana, and the Dean of the Graduate College at Urbana. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Pogue, this appointment was approved.

APPOINTMENTS TO THE FACULTY AND SABBATICAL LEAVE OF ABSENCE (9) The following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant P r o fessor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. Positions in the University are classified in the following categories and are designated in the budget by the symbols indicated: A-—indefinite tenure; P — i n definite term appointment for part-time service only, B — two years; D-—one year; E — nine months from the beginning of the academic year; G—special tenure; Q — initial term appointment for Professor or Associate Professor; W — one-year appointment subject to special written agreement without commitment for an indefinite term appointment or for service credit in a probationary period; Y — twelve months' service required instead of two semesters; 1-7 —indicates the number of years of service which will be credited at the end of the contract period toward completion of the probationary period relating to tenure. Figures following a symbol indicate precentage of time if the appointment is on a part-time basis (e.g., D75 means one year on three-fourths time). Chicago Circle 1. ROBERT L.
