ELLEN MARIE JACOBSEN, employee in the Physical Plant Department, disability leave with full pay from April I through May 29, 1943, and indefinite leave of absence thereafter without pay until she is able to resume her duties. This is in accordance with the University Statutes. Leaves of Absence for Military and Other War Service (The leave in each case is without pay.) A. M. BUSWELL, Professor of Chemistry, on indefinite leave, beginning September 1, 1943. K E I T H L. WILSON, Instructor in Music and Instructor in Military Bands, from September 1, 1943, through August 31, 1944. FRELRIC J. MOSHER, Assistant in English, from September 1, 1943, through August 31, 1944. RAY L. CARROLL, Painter in the Chicago Physical Plant Department, from July I through August 31, 1943. EDWARD C. BERNELL, Instructor in Obstetrics and Gynecology, from July 10 through August 31, 1943. DEAN HILL, Janitor in the Chicago Physical Plant Department, from July 16 through August 31, 1943. JOHN ELDON GIESEKING, Assistant Professor of Soil Physics and Assistant Chief of Soil Physics and Soil Survey, from August I to October, I, 1943. KENNETH W. SMITH, Mechanical Engineer in the Physical Plant Department, from August 12 through August 31, 1943. JOHN V A N HORNE, Professor and Head of the Department of Spanish and Italian, leave of absence without pay so that he may accept an appointment as Cultural Relations Attache in the American Foreign Service Auxiliary in Madrid, Spain, this leave to begin when he is called to such service and to continue for the duration of the war. This service has been requested by the Department of State. Termination of Leaves of Absence for War Service A report that the following members of the staff who have been granted leaves of absence have been released from military service and have returned to active status on the University staff: RAYMOND GREEN, Associate in Surgery, effective July I, 1943. GEORGE H. BLAND, Sound Technician in the Physical Plant Department effective at noon, July 15, 1943.

On motion of Mr. McKelvey, these leaves were approved.

CHAIRMAN O F G E N E R A L ADVISORY COMMITTEE (19) T h e organization of the University of Illinois General Advisory Committee as originally approved by the Board of Trustees provides: " T h e r e shall be no general chairman of the Committee, and the President of the University (or a representative designated to act for him in his absence) shall preside at all meetings." It has been suggested by the Board of Trustees that the Chairman be selected from the membership of the Committee. Accordingly I recommend that its plan of organization be amended to provide: " T h e Chairman of the Committee will be appointed from its membership by the Board of Trustees on recommendation of the President of the University." I further recommend that Major Lenox R. Lohr, President of the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago, who has been a member of the General Advisory Committee since it was organized, be appointed Chairman of the Committee. Major Lohr has agreed to accept this appointment on the condition that in the administration of this Committee he will follow the principle that the General Advisory Committee can render a real service by making specific nonpartisan recommendations on matters definitely within its purview and that he will expect the support of the Board of Trustees and the administration of the University on that principle.

On motion of Mr. Nickell, these recommendations were adopted. On motion of Mr. Davis, the Secretary was instructed to send
