EXECUTIVE SESSION

At this point, the Board went into executive session to consider matters presented by the President of the University.

PROPOSED CONTRACT FOR V-12 NAVAL UNIT

(23) Representatives of the Navy Department recently visited the University and discussed the details of a contract for a V-12 Specialized Naval Training unit of 450 men. This unit will arrive about July 1, and instruction will begin on or about July 5 and continue for 16 weeks. It is proposed to house 350 of the trainees in Busey and Evans Halls and 100 in Illini Hall. Those housed in Busey and Evans Halls will be messed at that place, and those at Illini Hall will be messed in the Illini Union ballroom with the Signal Corps unit. Details of financial arrangements were discussed with the Comptroller and other University officers and the following arrangements are proposed (amounts shown are monthly unless otherwise stated): Use of Facilities An allowance of 4% on book value of buildings used: Busey and Evans Halls $ I 639 Illini Hall, 3rd and 4th floors only 271 Housing Expense* Total for both halls 3 500 Messing* Busey and Evans Halls, $1 per man per day (estimated) 10 500 Illini Hall group (Illini Union ballroom) 8o£ per man per day— 100 men (estimated) 2 400 Physical Education* Use of recreational facilities including locker and towel service, $1.50 per month per man 67s Medical Service* Hospitalization and specialist service when necessary—40(t per man per month 180 Instruction* Tentative arrangement of $20 per man per month (revised budget to be completed after instruction begins) 9 000 Commissioning Certain additional equipment in Busey and Evans Halls and installation, total estimated at 2 575 All items which are starred are subject to readjustment on the basis of actual cost at the end of each quarter. All items except use of facilities include an allowance of 3 % for general administrative expense. T h e estimated total per month, not including commissioning, is $28,165. I recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute a contract conforming substantially to the foregoing provisions.

On motion of Mr. Jensen, this authority was granted as recommended.

CONTRACT WITH WAR DEPARTMENT FOR RESEARCH WORK IN DEPARTMENT OF CERAMIC ENGINEERING (24) The Comptroller and Secretary of the Board have been authorized to execute a contract with the W a r Department for a research project, "Investigation of and Reports on Ceramic-Type Coatings for Exhaust Disposal Systems," for the Army Air Forces at Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio. This is a fixed-price service contract and is drawn for a period of one year.
