GRANTS FROM T H E ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION AND THE FORD FOUNDATION (29) The Rockefeller Foundation has made a grant of $45,000 to the University of Illinois for research on the biochemistry of insects. This grant will be for a three-year period beginning September I, 1959, and is a continuation of previous grants made for research in this field during the past nine years by Professors Clyde W. Kearns and James Sternburg of the Department of Entomology. The funds provided will be used for the salaries and wages of scientific and technical staff, laboratory equipment, and travel expenses. The Ford Foundation has made a grant of $47,500 to the University of Illinois to be used over a period of three years for the released time of members of the faculty for educational television programming. It will be used in connection with a course in economics and one in sociology and will provide full support to televise both courses the first year, and partial support of the courses in the next two years. It is the expectation of the officers of the Foundation that the program will be a permanent one and that the amount of instruction given over television will be increased in future years. T h e grant was made in response to an application submitted by Professor James R. Shipley, Head of the Department of Art and Chairman of the Committee to Direct Planning and Research in Instructional Television, and endorsed by Deans Royden Dangerfield and F. T. Wall and by Mr. Robert E. Gentry, representing the Business Office. The University has accepted these grants from the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation for the purposes indicated.
