On motion of Mrs. Watkins, these appointments were approved.

APPOINTMENT OF PROFESSOR JOSEPH S. BEGANDO AS ASSISTANT TO T H E PRESIDENT (29) I recommend the appointment of Dr. Joseph S. Begando, now Assistant Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Associate Professor of Pharmacy Administration, as Assistant to the President, effective September 1, 1958, at a salary of $15,000 a year on "Y" basis. Dr. Begando's academic tenure in the University will continue although he will have no teaching duties under this administrative assignment. As Assistant to the President, his duties will be to represent the President on specific assignments in institutional relations and to assist the President in development activities. H e will represent the President in the continuing relationships with the University of Illinois Foundation and the University of Illinois Alumni Association, and in alumni affairs in general. H e will work with the University Committee on Institutional Gifts and Development and the University Committee on Institutional Relations. H e will assist the President in relationships with advisory committees, civic groups, and constituencies with which liaison must be maintained. H e will work closely with faculty and administrative officers in these assignments. There will be new undertakings in the new position but the appointment will also consolidate a number of assignments which heretofore have been carried directly by the President and other University officers who should be relieved of them. The appointment will not change the relationship of the President to any present administrative officer.

On motion of Mr. Swain, this appointment was approved.

CHANGES IN DEPOSITS REQUIRED A N D FEE REFUNDS AT T H E CHICAGO PROFESSIONAL COLLEGES (30) Officials of the Chicago Professional Colleges and the Committee on Fees recommend the following deposit requirements and fee refund provisions at the Chicago Professional Colleges: 1. A deposit of $60.00 shall be required from all students who are accepted for admission to the Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry within two weeks of the date of their notification of acceptance. (This represents an increase from $15.00 to $60.00 in these two schools. T h e deposit of $15.00 now in force for the College of Pharmacy will remain, and, as at present, no deposit will be required of students accepted for the School of Nursing.) 2. Deposits received for admission to the Colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, and Pharmacy shall be refunded in full to students admitted to the Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry who request cancellation of admission by January 15 of the year of the applicant's registration in the University, and to students admitted to the College of Pharmacy who request cancellation of admission by September I of the year of the applicant's registration. 3. One-third of the deposit, or $20.00, made by students in the Colleges of Medi-
