DIRECTOR O F C O N T R O L SYSTEMS LABORATORY (18) T h e D e a n of the College of Engineering recommends t h e appointment of Dr. Daniel Alpert, Research P r o f e s s o r in Physics and Technical Director of the Control Systems Laboratory, as Research P r o f e s s o r on indefinite tenure and Director of the Control Systems L a b o r a t o r y beginning July 1, 1959, at an annual salary of $20,000 on " Y " basis. T h e appointment as Director will be on a year-to-year basis, the initial appointment t o be for the two months beginning July 1. The Vice-President and P r o v o s t and the D e a n of the G r a d u a t e College concur in this appointment which is to replace P r o f e s s o r F . W . Loomis who will retire as Director at the end of the current fiscal year. I recommend approval.

On motion of Mr. Johnston, this appointment was approved. Vice-President and Provost Ray presented a statement concerning the services of Professor Loomis. On motion of Mrs. Watkins, the Secretary was requested to convey to Professor Loomis an expression of the Board's appreciation of his distinguished services.
