BOARD OF TRUSTEES

R E C O M M E N D A T I O N S O F T H E UNIVERSITY P A T E N T COMMITTEE (19) T h e University Patent Committee submits, with the concurrence of the Chairman of the University Research Board, the following recommendations relating to inventions by members of the staff. 1. Method for destroying hardwood tree stumps — C. S. Walters, Professor of Forestry, and K. R. Peterson, Research Associate in Forestry, inventors. At its meeting on April 18, 1958, the Board of Trustees approved the transfer of this invention to the University of Illinois Foundation with authority to file a patent application if it appeared desirable. The Foundation has now requested the Patent Committee to make a recommendation as to the distribution of any net income that may be received from licenses or royalties on this invention. T h e Patent Committee recommends that 15 per cent of the income received by the Foundation from licenses or royalties on this invention remaining after the payment of all expenses incurred in connection with such invention be paid to the inventors. 2. Electrolytic saw — Marvin Metzger, Associate Professor of Physical Metallurgy, inventor. This invention is a device for cutting electrically conducting materials without strain by passing a direct current from the specimen to a wire cathode held in close proximity to it through a suitable electrolyte. T h e novel feature of the present device is that it uses a cathode in close proximity to the specimen, and this can produce localized cutting action even when the electrolyte is applied over a large area of the specimen. T h e Head of the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering is of the opinion that this development will be of use only in the laboratory and has little or no commercial application; he does not recommend that funds be expended in attempting to secure a patent. The Patent Committee concurs in this opinion and recommends that it be released to the United States Navy, the sponsoring agency under which it was developed. I concur in these recommendations.

On motion of Mr. Bissell, these recommendations were approved. On motion of Mr. Bissell, the Board adjourned.
