of graduate credit in specified courses chosen from anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, and Russian. The courses chosen must be in at least two departments. Minor for the Ph.D. Degree. A doctoral candidate who elects Russian Language and Area Studies as a minor must demonstrate a reading command of Russian as tested by examination or by completion of Russian 401 with a grade of "A" or " B , " and in addition must earn at least four units of graduate credit in courses chosen from the list given just above. The four units must be distributed among at least two departments, not including the department offering the candidate's major. This program has been approved by the Executive Committee of the Graduate College. The Senate Coordinating Council indicates that no other Senate jurisdiction is involved. I recommend approval.

On motion of Mr. Harewood, this recommendation was approved.

GRADUATE PROGRAM IN CHEMICAL PHYSICS (7) The Urbana-Champaign Senate recommends authorization of a graduate program leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Physics. This program has been approved by the Executive Committee of the Graduate College. Its objective is to make it possible for students to gain the necessary background for original research in the interdisciplinary field of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. The Senate Coordinating Council indicates that no other Senate jurisdiction is involved. There is submitted herewith a statement giving the requirements for admission and for the degree, a copy of which is being filed with the Secretary of the Board for record. I recommend approval.

On motion of Mrs. Watkins, this recommendation was approved.

CHANGE IN REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHERS OF VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE (8) The Urbana-Champaign Senate recommends approval of minors in general science and biology for teachers of vocational agriculture, which are necessary for teachers of vocational agriculture to obtain certification as teachers of general science or biology, under the law requiring twenty-four hours for a minor in these areas which will become effective in 1961. These changes have been approved by the Committee on Preparation of Secondary Teachers of Vocational Agriculture, the Committee on the Preparation of Secondary Teachers of Science, and the Council on Teacher Education. The Senate Coordinating Council indicates that no other Senate jurisdiction is involved. Submitted herewith are the details of these new requirements, a copy of which is being filed with the Secretary of the Board for record. I recommend approval. O n m o t i o n of M r . H u g h e s , t h i s r e c o m m e n d a t i o n w a s a p p r o v e d . SUMMER SPEECH CLINIC WORK BY DIVISION OF SERVICES FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN (9) The Division of Services for Crippled Children has been supporting summer speech clinics in cooperation with higher educational institutions in several areas of the state. The patients are children who can not be given the necessary care in their communities and those selected represent some of the most complex speech rehabilitation problems and are cases afflicted with cerebral palsy, cleft palate, severe hearing loss, and aphasia. They are eligible for treatment under the program of the Division and are in need of speech treatment as an integral Part of the complete medical care program. Cooperating institutions contribute their facilities and staff.
