BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETINGS OF COMMITTEES

A meeting of the Board's Finance Committee was held in the Illini Union Building, on Monday, May 16, beginning at 8:00 p.m., and meetings of the Committees on General Policy and Buildings and Grounds were held on Tuesday, May 17, in the forenoon, beginning at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m.

MINUTES APPROVED

The Secretary presented the minutes of the meetings of the Board of Trustees on December 16, 1959, and January 20, i960, press proof copies of which have previously been sent to the Board. On motion of Mrs. Watkins, these minutes were approved as printed on pages 1091 to 1160, inclusive. BUSINESS PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY The Board took up consideration of the following reports and recommendations from the President of the University.

APPOINTMENTS TO THE FACULTY (1) T h e following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. 1. ARTHUR E. BARKER, Professor of English, beginning February I, 1961, at an annual salary of $16,000 ( A ) . 2. JOHN J A Y BATEMAN, Assistant Professor of Classics, beginning September 1, 1960, at an annual salary of $7,500 ( B ) . 3. JOHN L. BRITTON, Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics, for one year beginning September 1, i960, at a salary of $7,500 ( D ) . 4. JACK M. CRANNELL, Assistant Manager, W I L L - T V , with rank of Assistant Professor, in the Division of University Broadcasting, on one-half time, and in the Office of Instructional Television, on one-half time, beginning June 1, i960, at an annual salary of $9,600 ( D Y ) . 5. FREDERIK W. DE WETTE, Research Assistant Professor of Physics, beginning May 16, i960, at an annual salary of $8,400 ( D Y ) . 6. ROBERT E. GALLAGHER, Assistant Professor of English, in the Division of Humanities, Chicago Undergraduate Division, beginning September 1, i960, at an annual salary of $6,600 ( B ) . 7. HOWARD J. GAMBLE, Visiting Associate Professor of Anatomy, in the College of Medicine, for one year from September 1, i960, at a salary of $12,000 (DY). 8. JERRY HIRSCH, Associate Professor of Psychology, beginning July 1, i960, at an annual salary of $8,500 (on leave of absence without pay from July 1. i960, to February 1, 1961) ( A ) . 9. DONNELL R. H U N T , Associate Professor of Agricultural Engineering, beginning September 1, i960, at an annual salary of $10,500 ( A V ) . 10. WILTON N. MELHORN, Visiting Associate Professor of Geology, for ten months from September 1, i960, at a salary of $8,150 ( G ) . 11. STEPHEN L. SHERWOOD, Clinical Associate Professor of Neurophysiology, in the Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine, beginning April I, i960, without salary ( A Y ) . 12. JOSEPH SIMON, Professor of Veterinary Pathology and Hygiene, in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and of Veterinary Research, in the Agricultural Experiment Station, for two years from May I, i960, at an annual salary ol $12,000 ( F Y ) . 13. HARRY J. SKORNIA, Associate Professor of Radio and Television, in the College of Journalism and Communications, beginning September 1, I96°> a ' a n annual salary of $12,300 ( A ) . 14. HERBERT STERN, Professor of Botany, for one month beginning August 1, i960, at a salary of $1,166.67; and for the academic year beginning September I, i960, at a salary of $10,500.
