BOARD OF TRUSTEES

BUSINESS PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY The Board took up consideration of the following reports and recommendations from the President of the University.

APPOINTMENT OF ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF EXTENSION SERVICE IN AGRICULTURE AND HOME ECONOMICS (1) The Dean of the College of Agriculture and the Director of the Extension Service in Agriculture and Home Economics recommends the appointment of Miss Martha L. Dunlap, presently on the staff of Montana State College, as Professor of H o m e Economics Extension and Assistant Director of the Extension Service in Agriculture and Home Economics beginning February 1, 1960, and continuing through August 31, 1961, at an annual salary of $11,500 on "BY"' basis. This appointment is to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Professor Lulu S. Black. All recommending officers concur. I recommend approval. O n m o t i o n of M r . H e r r i c k , t h i s a p p o i n t m e n t w a s a p p r o v e d . APPOINTMENTS TO THE FACULTY (2) T h e following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. 1. CHARLES L. BELL, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, in the College of Pharmacy, beginning October 1, 1959, at an annual salary of $6,800 ( D ) . 2. IRENAES A. BURCH, Counselor in the Student Counseling Service, and Assistant Professor of Psychology, Chicago Undergraduate Division, beginning February i, i960, at an annual salary of $8,400 ( B Y ) . 3. HANS-JURG GERBER, Research Assistant Professor of Physics, beginning November 16, 1959, at an annual salary of $7,500 ( D Y ) . 4. JOSEPH GOLDBERG, Assistant Professor of Aeronautical Engineering, beginning February 1, i960, at an annual salary of $8,500 ( D ) . 5. GILES B. ROBERTSON, Reference Librarian and Assistant Professor of Library Administration, Chicago Undergraduate Division, beginning November 1, 1959, at an annual salary of $7,400 ( B Y ) . 6. DEMITRI B. SHIMKIN, Visiting Professor of Anthropology, for the second semester of 1959-60, at a salary of $7,000 ( G ) . 7. GERALD A. WILLIAMS, Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, beginning September 1, 1959, without salary ( D Y ) .

On motion of Mr. Swain, these appointments were confirmed.

ADMISSION TO T H E COLLEGE OF NURSING (3) T h e Chicago Professional Colleges Senate has recommended that the present Continuation Program in Nursing, established several years ago to provide a curriculum for graduates of hospital schools of nursing leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science, be discontinued as a curriculum and that in lieu thereoi graduates of noncollegiate diploma schools of nursing be admitted to the College of Nursing with advanced standing. The amount of credit toward advanced standing and the requirements for completion of the degree in each individual case will be based upon an evaluation of the work done in the school of nursing previously attended, validated by a standardized examination and/or advanced courses in sequence. _ Graduates of hospital schools of nursing will continue to be admitted to the College of Nursing as heretofor except that some students will be given more advanced standing than others, depending on their previous training. T h e requirements for validation for credit by standardized examination will be increased from the present allowance of one and one-half standard deviation below the mean to a requirement of a rank in the examination at or above die fiftieth percentile. . . ,. . The Senate Coordinating Council has indicated no other Senate jurisdiction is involved. I concur.
