5. Steel shelving for tool room in Physical Plant Warehouse, from Lyon Metal Products Company, Aurora, the lowest bidder, at a price of $1,028.55, delivered and installed. 6. One Bausch and Lomb Quartz Spectrograph from the Bausch and Lomb Optical Company, Rochester, New York, at a price of $1,575 f.o.b. Urbana, for the Department of Chemistry. This is a non-competitive item as the Bausch and Lomb Optical Company is the only manufacturer of a suitable spectrograph. 7. One cyclotron magnet frame from the American Rolling Mill Company, the lowest bidder under specifications, at a total price of $5,687. The Board of Trustees has previously authorized the construction of a cyclotron by the Department of Physics, and funds have been made available for this purpose. 8. 35 Yearling Feeding Steers for the Department of Animal Husbandry from the Chicago Producers Commission Association at a total cost of approximately $2,000. This is a non-competitive item as the price is determined by the market at the time the purchase is made. 9. 281 cases of Pyrex Laboratory Glassware for the General Chemical Stores, the order to be divided between Rascher & Betzold, Chicago, and A. S. Aloe Company, Chicago, at a total cost of approximately $4,117. This is a noncompetitive item and sold through jobbers at prices fixed by the manufacturer, the lowest applying to lots of 100 or more cases. This purchase is sufficient to make two orders which will secure the lowest prices. 10. 24 Electric W a t e r Coolers to replace drinking fountains in the George Huff Gymnasium, New Agriculture Building, W o m a n ' s Building, and Lincoln Hall, from the Woodruff Coal Companv, Urbana, the lowest bidder, at a price of $3,306. 11. One Caterpillar Diesel No. 10 Auto Patrol and road maintainer from the Caterpillar Tractor Company, Peoria, at $1,850, less $300 credit for 3 old scrapers to be turned in, making the total net cost $1,550. This is a non-competitive item because it is proposed to purchase a reconditioned tractor. T h e Auto Patrol is capable of deeply scarifying, leveling, and regrading any or all cinder drives at any time of the year when the frost is less than six inches deep. This tractor is needed for maintaining the cinder drives on the campus. There is a total of (P/i miles of cinder drives on the campus proper and 10 miles of cinder roads on the South Farm. In addition, this tractor can be used as a snow plow and for moving and leveling earth in grading operations. 12. On motion of Mr. Cleary, these purchases were authorized as recommended.

REPORT OF DEATH BENEFITS PAID (45) A report that the Comptroller has been authorized to pay the death benefits to the beneficiaries of the following members of the staff in accordance with the University Statutes and the terms of their employment: 1. John F . Long, employee in the Physical Plant Department—$311. Mr. Long was in the service of the University from August 15, 1912, to July 5, 1018, and from November 26, 1918, until his retirement on October 1, 1930. H e died on March 29, 1940. 2.
