Compensation Act, including payment of medical and hospital bills (see 4 below), and an allowance of $14.03 a week so long as he may remain permanently disabled until the maximum amount of $44°° has been reached; (2) thereafter, under the Workmen's Compensation Act, he would be entitled to apply for a pension of $29.33 a month, payable from a special fund under the supervision of the State Treasurer for making payments of this nature; (3) extension of sick leave on a without-pay basis from March 13, 1940, to September I, 1040; and (4) payment of medical and hospital bills amounting to $656.79. The amount payable to Mr. Hickey from the time of the injury to the end of the present fiscal year, June 30, 1940, after allowing for regular sick leave to which he is entitled, is $645.38. The total payments to him during the present fiscal year therefore will be $1,302.17. These payments are in addition to the amount to which he is entitled under University rules for vacation and retirement. The provision in the budget for injuries to employees covers only minor or routine cases, and the present balance is only $849.39. Consequently the Committee requests a supplementary appropriation of $1,302.17. O n motion of M r . Cleary, these payments were authorized, and the appropriation was made as recommended, by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Adams, M r . Cleary, M r . Jensen, M r . Mayer, Mr. Moschel, Mrs. Plumb, Mr. P o g u e ; no, n o n e ; absent, Mr. H o r n e r , Mr. K a r r a k e r , Dr. Meyer, M r . Wieland.

GIFT OF MR. AND MRS. MERLE J . TREES

(39) The list of paintings presented to the University by Mr. and Mrs. Merle J. Trees as reported to the Board on December 18, 1939 (Minutes, page 684), did not include one item which they desire to present to the University as part of their gift for 1939. Accordingly I recommend that the list under item 18, page 684, of the minutes o£ that meeting be amended to read as follows: Artist and Painting Value Ralph Blakelock, "Landscape" J 3 000 Pushman, "Still Life" 2 000 Homer Martin, "Landscape" 3 000 French Primitive, "Madonna" 3 000 Winslow Homer, "Landscape" 3 500 Romney, "Portrait of Lady and Child" and accompanying sketch of painting 8 000 Frank Vining Smith, "Marine" I OOP ?23 500 O n motion of Mr. Cleary, the minutes were amended as recommended.

SELECTIVE ADMISSION OF STUDENTS

Mr. Cleary inquired what progress was being made by the University Senate Committee on Admissions from Secondary Schools on the proposal, made informally at the meeting of the Board on July 21, 1939, that consideration be given to restricting the admission of high school graduates in the lower twenty-five per cent of their classes to those who pass some qualifying test. President Willard read a letter from the Chairman of the Committee on Admissions from Secondary Schools reporting progress. Mr. Jensen also reported on joint meetings held by an Advisory Committee of the Illinois High School Principals' Association (of which he is a member) with the University Committee to consider this proposal. President Willard reported that he expected to have a recommendation on this matter from the University Senate for the next Board meeting.
