BEQUEST O F FARM LANDS FOR SCHOLARSHIP PURPOSES (20) A certified life underwriter of Champaign has an elderly client who is interested in bequeathing to the University of Illinois certain Champaign County farm lands under the following tentative general conditions: 1. She will provide in h e r will that upon her death the farms will become the property of the University to be held in trust for the purposes specified below. 2. T h e University will pay the net income (after deducting taxes, reserves for repairs, replacements and improvements, and expenses of management) to the daughter of the testatrix during her lifetime. 3. Upon the death of the daughter the income from the farms may be used for scholarship purposes. 4. T h e University may sell the farms, invest the proceeds in securities, and use the income for scholarship purposes. T h e underwriter has asked that this matter be presented to the Board for its consideration so that he can advise his client whether or not the University will accept h e r bequest. O n m o t i o n of M r . P o g u e , this m a t t e r w a s r e f e r r e d t o t h e Committee on Agriculture for investigation a n d recommendation. GIFTS T O T H E UNIVERSITY (21) A report of the following gifts received by the University since the last report: 1. Electric Auto-Lite Company, Toledo, Ohio, $250 per month for a fellowship in the Department of Chemistry for one year from September 1, 1939. This is a continuation of a grant previously made by this Company. 2. M & R Dietetic Laboratories of Columbus, Ohio, $600 for the support of one aspect of the research programs of Professors F . R. Steggerda and H . H . Mitchell. This is a new grant. 3. Continental Oil Company, $750 for additional research on lubrication. (Graduate fellowship in Chemistry). 4. G. Frederick Smith Chemical Company, $750 for a continuation of the fellowship in Analytical Chemistry. 5. Standard Brands, Incorporated, $600 for additional research on the effects of yeast on the digestive tract. 6. Aeration Processes, Incorporated, $375 for a Chemistry fellowship. 7- Phenolphthalein Research, Incorporated, $350 for additional phenolphthalein research. T h i s report w a s received for record.
