REPORT OF DEATH BENEFITS PAID (19) A report that the Comptroller has been authorized to pay the death benefits to the beneficiaries of the following members of the staff in accordance with the University Statutes and the terms of their employment: 1. Jakob Kunz, Professor of Mathematical Physics—$2,425. Professor Kunz was in the service of the University from September 1, 1909, until his death on July 18, 1938. 2. Mrs. Rebecca Morgan, employee in the Physical Plant Department—$450. Mrs. Morgan was in the service of the University from February 16, 1902, until her death on July 19, 1938. 3. E. E. Nearpass, Assistant Professor of Art—$1,450. Professor Nearpass was in the service of the University from September 1, 1919, until his death on August 4, 1938. 4. Peter Drennan, retired employee in the Physical Plant Department (Chicago)— $385. Mr. Drennan was in the active service of the University from October 1, 1915, until his retirement on September 1, 1933. He died on August 14, 1938. 5. Lauretta M. Brown, employee in the Physical Plant (Chicago)—$171. Miss Brown was in the service of the University from September 23, 1935, until her death on August 29, 1938.

BEQUEST OF ALICE P. BIXBY (20) At the meeting of the Board on March 29, 1937 (Minutes, page 222), a report was made that under the will of the late Alice P. Bixby, of Chicago, the University has been named as a residuary legatee. The heirs have been advised that there will be no residuary estate and consequently the bequest to the University fails.

HOUSING OF STUDENTS IN STADIUM TOWER (21) A request from the Director of the Athletic Association for approval of a plan to house a limited number of students in the Stadium.

This plan was approved, on trial and subject to revocation.

TRANSFER OF ILLINOIS CHARITABLE EYE AND EAR INFIRMARY TO THE UNIVERSITY (22) Pursuant to an act of the General Assembly of Illinois approved July 3, 1931, the University and the State Department of Public Welfare have entered into a formal agreement covering the general management, control, and operation of the Research and Educational Hospitals. The law authorizing this agreement defines the Research and Educational Hospitals as comprising the University Clinical Institute, the outpatient department (or dispensary) of the University, the Institute for Juvenile Research, the Illinois Surgical Institute for Children, the Psychiatric Institute, and "such other hospitals and institutes hereafter created, as may be added thereto by agreement of the Department and the University." The law thus excludes from this agreement and joint management arrangement the Illinois Charitable Eye and Ear Infirmary which was in existence at the time the law was passed. On July 12, 1938, 1 attended a conference in Chicago a t the request of Director A. L. Bowen of the State Department of Public Welfare, at which were also present Dean D. J. Davis of the College of Medicine, Dr. M. J. Worthington, Director of the Research and Educational Hospitals, and Dr. H. S. Gradle, Chief of Staff of the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, to discuss the transfer of the Infirmary to the University of Illinois for affiliation with its Graduate School. In 1935 preliminary consideration was given to a proposal for a cooperative arrangement between the Infirmary and the University of Illinois College of Medicine for graduate work, but nothing came
