HEADSHIP OF DEPARTMENT OF FRENCH

(24) Professor D. H . Carnahan has requested that he be relieved of the Headship of the Department of Romance Languages on account of his health. I recommend his request be granted. A recommendation has been submitted (page 362) to divide the Department of Romance Languages into the Department of French and the Department of Spanish and Italian. I recommend that Dr. Joseph F . Jackson, Associate Professor of French at Yale University, be appointed Professor of French and Head of the Department on indefinite tenure, beginning September 1, 1939, at an annual salary of $6,ooo.

On motion of Mr. Jensen, these recommendations were adopted.

HEADSHIP OF DEPARTMENT OF SPANISH A N D ITALIAN (25) A recommendation that Dr. John Van H o m e , Professor of Romance Languages, be appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Spanish and Italian, on indefinite tenure, beginning September 1, 1939, at an annual salary of $5,000. O n m o t i o n of M r . C l e a r y , t h i s a p p o i n t m e n t w a s m a d e a s r e c o m mended. APPOINTMENT OF DR. PERC1VAL BAILEY AS PROFESSOR OF NEUROLOGY A N D NEUROLOGICAL SURGERY (26) On November 10, 1937 (Minutes, page 563), the Board of Trustees authorized the expansion of the Department of Neurology and Neurological Surgery to provide an adequate professional staff for the enlarged quarters which the Department will occupy in the new unit of the Research and Educational Hospitals which is being constructed by the Department of Public Welfare for the study and treatment of nervous diseases. As an initial program, effective September 1, 1939, the Board authorized a number of new positions in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Surgery, including one chief neurologist and pathologist on full time at a salary of $10,000 a year. I r e c o m m e n d the a p p o i n t m e n t of Dr. Percival Bailey, P r o f e s s o r of S u r g e r y and N e u r o l o g y at t h e U n i v e r s i t y of Chicago, as P r o f e s s o r of N e u r o l o g y and N e u r o l o g i c a l S u r g e r y , on indefinite t e n u r e b e g i n n i n g September 1, 1939, at an annual salary of $10,000. This appointment was discussed informally with the Board at the time the program of expansion was approved.

On motion of Dr. Meyer, this appointment was made as recommended.

APPOINTMENT OF DALE W . NICHOLS AS CARNEGIE VISITING PROFESSOR OF ART (27) As reported to the Board of Trustees on February 11, 1939 (Minutes, page 231), the University has received a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York in support of a visiting professorship in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. T h e Dean of that College recommends the appointment of Mr. Dale W. Nichols, of Glenview, Illinois, as Carnegie Visiting Professor of Art, for one year, beginning September 1, 1939, at a salary of $4,000, payable from this grant. I concur in this recommendation.

On motion of Mr. Moschel, this appointment was made as recommended.

NEW APPOINTMENTS OF PROFESSORIAL RANK (28) A recommendation that the following appointments to the staff, effective September 1, 1939, be approved: 1. John L. G. Weysser, Assistant Professor of Mining Engineering, for two years beginning September 1, 1939, at a salary of $3,000 a year.
