BOARD OF TRUSTEES

GIFTS TO THE UNIVERSITY (45) A report of the following gifts received by the University since the last report: 1. Solvay Process Company, $750 for the continuation of a fellowship in Organic Chemistry during the year 1939-1940, which they have supported during the past three years. 2. Rockefeller Foundation, $7,500 in support of the research work of Professors W. H . Rodebush and A. M. Buswell of the Department of Chemistry on the spectroscopic analysis of water. This grant is a renewal of one made three years ago and will be available for a three-year period from July 1, 1939, to June 30, 1942. 3. Dick X-ray Company, a used transformer to the Department of Physiology to be used in Professor F . R. Steggerda's researches. 4. Illinois Society of Engineers, $35 to the College of Engineering to be used towards the expenses of the Second Surveying Conference, which was held a t the University on March 3 and 4. 5. American Butter Company, $600 for an assistantship in support of research work by Professor F . L. Wynd, of the Department of Botany. 6. Mr. Felix Gehrmann (brother of the late Dr. Adolph Gehrmann, for many years a member of the faculty of the College of Medicine), $500 for the purpose of buying old medical books and for their care. 7. Monsanto Chemical Company, St. Louis, Missouri, $750 to the Department of Chemistry for a fellowship in Chemistry. 8. The Social Science Research Council, a grant-in-aid of $600 for the use of Dr. L. M. Hanks for his research work on the Blackfoot Indian Reserve during the coming summer. 9. The Tobacco By-Products and Chemical Corporation, $600 for the continuation of research work on Nicotine Insecticides. 10. The Chicago Vitreous Enamel Products Company, $73.75 for additional research work on Enamel Frits. 11. State of Illinois, Department of Highways, $1,500 for the continuation of research work on Expansion Joints. 12. American Society for Testing Materials, $500 additional for research work on Speed of Testing Metals. 13. Standard Brands, Incorporated, $600 for the continuation of research work on Yeast Effect on the Digestive Tract. 14. American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, $975 additional for Air Conditioning Research. 15. University of Illinois Library School Association, $300 for the continuation of the Katherine L. Sharp Scholarship in Library Science.

This report was received for record. At this point, Mr. Pogue took his place with the Board.

HEARING O F STUDENTS O N DORMITORIES FOR MEN (46) A request t h a t a delegation of men students be heard on the matter of dormitories for men.

This request was granted, and the following students, who were introduced, discussed the matter, presented a resolution of the Student Senate, and withdrew: George H. Pace, '39, President of Student Senate and Senior Class; Charles W. Filson, '39, President of the Men's Independent District Association; Richard J. Nelson, '40, President-elect of M.I.D.A.; James Monroe, '39, Editorial writer of the Daily Illini; Edgar Barton, Law student and former President of M.I.D.A.

RESOLUTION

In the opinion of the members of the Student Senate: There is now a shortage of adequate men's housing facilities at the University of Illinois. The present system of approved housing greatly improved the living conditions at the University, but there are still too few approved houses to take care
