BOARD OF TRUSTEES

[February 16

EXECUTIVE SESSION President Forsyth, referring to Section T w o of the Open Meetings Act, stated: "A motion is now in order to hold an executive session to consider information regarding the appointment, employment, or dismissal of employees or officers, and to discuss pending, probable, or imminent litigation against or on behalf of the University and to discuss the acquisition of real property." T h e motion was made by Mrs. Day and approved unanimously. With the trustees and the secretary present, the president reported on pending searches for University officers as follows: Director of Public Affairs H e distributed the credentials of three individuals who constitute the finalists in this search, indicating that one probably would withdraw and discussing in some detail the remaining two. Interviews will be arranged and the trustees may attend as convenient. Chancellor, Urbana T h e committee has reduced its list to 48 names, perhaps 20 to 25 of whom are strong candidates. T h e screening will continue, to produce a dozen names. Interviewing should begin in late M a r c h or early April. (Noting diat he would be out of die country during a portion of this time, the president said that Vice President Weir will represent him.) As in the search for the chancellor at Chicago, individual trustees who find it convenient will be invited to meet candidates in Chicago, typically at lunch or breakfast in the course of die visit. University Counsel T h e President had written die trustees, noting that die university counsel, Mr. Costello, had expressed his wish to retire effective September 1, 1984, and outlining his general plan for a search committee to advise him on die selection of a replacement. By consensus, the trustees endorsed the procedures. T h e president will make a n announcement at die regular meeting. At this .point,, the general officers joined the executive session and die following matters were considered. Litigation with the City of Chicago (1) There is pending in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Municipal Department (Case No. 81 Ml 62804) a complaint initiated by the City of Chicago against the University of Illinois seeking the assessment of fines and a mandatory injunction in connection with certain alleged violations of the Chicago Building Code at the University, of Illinois Hospital. The city takes the position that the Code requires the installation of sprinklers in the Telelift system in the hospital and that the lack of the same constitutes a violation. The architects and the University's safety officer state that the Telelift system compUes with the city code and that, in any event, the lack of sprinklers in the Telelift does not present a threat to life and
