Litigation Initiated by Margareta Vranicar (36) A complaint has been filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Illinois (Case No. CV78-0176-D) by Margareta Vranicar, a former employee of the University at the Urbana-Champaign campus, against the University. T h e complaint is in two counts, each seeking damages I n unspecified amounts and recovery of costs and expenses of the action, including reasonable attorney's fees. Count I seeks recovery under the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and the Fair Labor Standards Act and alleges that the University willfully paid plaintiff at a rate less than it was paying to employees of the opposite sex for work requiring equal skill, effort, and responsibility under similar working conditions, and that the differential in pay was based solely on the factor of sex. Count I I seeks recovery under the federal Minimum Wage Law on the same basis as Count I. T h e university counsel has recommended that he be authorized to take such steps as are necessary or appropriate, including the employment of special counsel, to protect the interests of the University in this matter and to defend the complaint. I concur. T h e student advisory vote was: Aye, Miss Kooper, M r . Sobotka, M r . Watson; no, none. O n motion of M r . Livingston, authority was given as recommended by the following vote: Aye, M r . Forsyth, M r . H a h n , M r . Howard, M r . Lenz, M r . Livingston, Mr. Neal, Mrs. R a d e r , Mrs. Shepherd, M r . Velasquez; no, n o n e ; absent, Governor Thompson. T h e r e being no further business, the board adjourned.
