circumstances the College is recommending that the usual conditions governing leaves of absence be waived in the case of Professor Baldwin purely on its merits, that is, his professional reputation and the importance of the research work in which he is engaged.

On motion of Mr. Karraker, this leave was granted as recommended.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR F. P. SHEPARD

(6) Associate Professor F. P. Shepard, of the Department of Geology and Geography, who is on leave of absence during the present academic year (the first semester without pay and the second semester a sabbatical leave on onehalf pay), has been granted an extension of his leave, without pay, for the first semester of 1938-1939 to enable him to pursue further certain researches on oceanography on the Pacific Coast. To carry on his research program effectively it is necessary for Professor Shepard to be away for a part of each year. He has requested that he be given a leave of absence without pay during the first semester of each year for a period of years. The Executive Committee of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School Research Board recommend that in addition to the leave of absence without pay granted Professor Shepard for the first semester of 1938-1939, a similar leave of absence be granted him for the years 1939-1940 and 1940-1941; and that the continuation of this arrangement beyond the next biennium be subject to further consideration and approval. On motion of Mr. K a r r a k e r , this arrangement was approved as recommended.
