RETIREMENT OF PROFESSOR ARTHUR BERESFORD

(3) At the last meeting of the Board I presented a recommendation that Professor Arthur Beresford of the School of Music be retired beginning September 1, 1931, with an allowance of ¥1,095 on account of his health. Under the rules he would not automatically retire at this time, having been in the service of the University only thirteen years. The retiring allowance indicated is based on this service. In view of this fact the Board desired to know i it could legally give him a retiring allowance and accordf ingly I submitted the question to the Legal Counsel, who advised that assuming the power of the Board to provide and maintain a general retiring allowance scheme, i i t s not beyond the power of the Board to pass what would amount to an amendatory resolution retiring Professor Beresford with an allowance. I also submitted this information to the Finance Committee, which is considering the general question of retiring allowances, and I now wish to recommend, subject to the concurrence of the Finance Committee, that Professor Beresford be retired with the allowance indicated beginning September 1, 1931.
