PETRU, OF CICERO, FOR NEGOTIATIONS FOR R E D U C E D RAILROAD RATES F O R STUDENTS DURING HOLIDAYS (18) President Trees has referred to me a request from Mr. Frank J. Petru, of Cicero, the father of one of our students, that the Board take action that would lead to negotiations with the Illinois Central Railroad towards securing reduced railroad fares for the students on holiday trips home, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc. The Illinois Central hasriotoffered reduced rates during the Christmas and Easter holidays for m a n y years. It is obvious that it does not need to offer reduced rates during those holidays in order to attract business because not m a n y students stay here during those holidays. It is an advantage to the railroad to offer rates on Thanksgiving D a y , because a relatively small number of students is in the habit of going away for that holiday, unless there is the attraction of a low rate. So far as the University is concerned, w e are sorry to have the railroads offer rates for Thanksgiving D a y because it encourages students to be absent from classes on Wednesday afternoon, Friday, and Saturday, and it interferes with our class work. President Trees stated that h e h a d taken this matter u p with the railroad c o m p a n y , a n d h a d been informed that the railroad officers felt that they could not consistently inaugurate reduced fares during the holidays.
