MATTERS PRESENTED BY PROVOST BABCOCK The Board considered the following matters presented by the Provost, acting for the President of the University. LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR MRS. ALTA GWINN SAUNDERS (1) On recommendation of Professors Bernbaum and S o i l and of Dean Thompcvl son, I recommend that Mrs. Alta Gwinn Saunders, Assistant Professor of Business English, be given leave of absence without pay from February I to August i, 1927, to enable her to take advantage of an opportunity to do some research work for a business organization. Such work offers her valuable opportunity to strengthen herself for her future teaching of advanced students in the College of Commerce. O n motion of M r s . Evans, this leave was granted. LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR PROFESSOR J. M. MATHEWS (2) I recommend that Professor J. M . Mathews, Professor of Political Science, be given sabbatical leave of absence on half-pay for the year 1927-28, for the purpose of travel and study. O n motion of M r . Armstrong, this leave w a s granted. LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR PROFESSOR R. C. ZUPPKE (3) Professor Carl Lundgren, Acting Director of Physical Welfare, and Dean C. E. Chadsey recommend that Professor R. C. Zuppke be given a leave of absence on full pay from December 11 to February 8, to enable him to go to California to be with his mother who is seriously ill. Professor Zuppke has no class work until the second semester and no football practice until the beginning of the second semester. I concur in this recommendation.' O n motion of M r s . Grigsby, this leave w a s granted. APPOINTMENT OF DR. EDWARD L. HE1NTZ AS ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR EMERITUS (4) Dr. D. J, Davis reports that Dr. Edward L. Heintz of the c i i a faculty lncl has been seriously il for a long time, that he has not been able to do any work for l a year, and that it i unlikely that he will recover sufficiently to be able to carry s on active teaching. Dean Davis recommends that he be given the rank of Associate Professor, emeritus. Accordingly, I recommend that Dr. Edward L. Heintz be appointed Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, emeritus, effective this date. O n motion of Dr. Noble, this recommendation w a s approved. DEATH BENEFIT OF PROFESSOR JOHN M. SNODGRASS (5) Professor John M . Snodgrass of the Department of Railway Engineering died on Saturday, December 4, following a major operation which he underwent in Chicago. He was on the staff from September I, 1902, until a few days before his death, and under the rules his death benefit should be fifty per cent of his present salary, $4,750, or $2,375. I recommend that $2,375 be appropriated from the Reserve and Contingent Fund for the death benefit of Professor Snodgrass, and that the Comptroller be authorized to pay the same to Professor Snodgrass's legal representative.
