THE UNIVERSITY

Conceived in 1967, Sangamon State University was established by the Illinois General Assembly in 1969, the first of two senior institutions. The upper-level concept of Sangamon State, and of Governors State University in Park Forest, was the result of an extensive study by the Bo^rd of Higher Education/ developed in its Master;'Plan which recognized the need for an innovative response to the growth of the community college system •andfoY new ways for individuals to enter upper-division and graduate study. Designated the state's public affairs university, Sangamon; State was charged with training persons for public service and with fostering an active understanding of contemporary social, environmental, technological, and ethical problems as thev relate to public
