BOARD OF TRUSTEES

would be a need to move cautiously in the transition and take time to define this campus as a part of the University of Illinois. President Ikenberry concluded his report by saying that he was supportive of the transfer of Sangamon State University to the University of Illinois and that he sought input from all quarters regarding a transition. Following his report to the board, the president recognized and introduced observers from the campus senates and from the University Senates Conference.1 He then welcomed the new trustees to the board and thanked the board members as a group for all they contribute on a constant basis to the University. BUSINESS PRESENTED BY THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD Mr. Lamont emphasized the importance of the proposal to join Sangamon State University with the University of Illinois. He asked that the board be brought into discussions of future plans for this new part of the University of Illinois.

There was no business presented under this aegis.

NEW BUSINESS

Mrs. Gravenhorst introduced Dr. and Mrs. Bristow, her guests at this meeting, and indicated that they would join the trustees for luncheon. Dr. Bristow is a board member of the Division for Specialized Care for Children, an entity within the University.

REGULAR AGENDA

The board considered the following reports and recommendations from the president of the University. By consensus, the board agreed that one vote would be taken and considered the vote on each agenda item nos. 1 through 9 inclusive. The recommendations were individually discussed but acted upon at one time. (The record of board action appears at the end of each item.)

Appointment of Associates to the Center for Advanced Study, Urbana

(1) Each year the Center for Advanced Study awards appointments as associates in the center, providing one semester of release time for creative work. Associates are selected in an annual competition involving the faculty of all departments and colleges. The appointments allow the faculty award winners to carry out self-initiated programs of scholarly research or professional activity.
