PROFESSOR I. O. BAKER, ACTING H E A D OF T H E D E P A R T M E N T OF CIVIL E N G I N E E R I N G (11) A recommendation that Professor I. 0 . Baker be appointed Acting Head of the Department of Civil Engineering for the current year and that he be allowed an additional compensation for this service at the rate of $500 per year of twelve months, effective October 1, 1920.

This appointment was made, by the following vote: Aye: Mr. Abbott, Mrs. Blake, Mrs. Busey, Mr. Carr, Mrs. Evans, Mr. Herbert, Mr. Hoit, Mr. Trimble, Mr. Ward; no, none; Mr. Blair, Mr. Lowden.

ASSISTANT D E A N OF FOREIGN S T U D E N T S (12) A recommendation that Dr. David H. Carnahan, Professor of Romance Languages, be appointed Assistant Dean of Men for Foreign Students for the year beginning September 1, 1920, with an additional compensation of $750 for the year.

On motion of Mrs. Evans, this appointment was made.

A P P O I N T M E N T O F C. S. HILL. IN L A N D S C A P E G A R D E N I N G (13) A recommendation that Mr. Chaunce S. Hill, now Associate in Landscape Gardening, be appointed Assistant Professor of Landscape Gardening, in charge of tne work of the division of Landscape Gardening, in the department of Horticulture, for one year, beginning September 1,1920, at a salary of $3,000.

This appointment was made, by the following bote: Aye: Mr. Abbott, Mrs. Blake, Mrs. Busey, Mr. Carr, Mrs. Evans, Mr. Herbert, Mr. Hoit, Mr. Trimble, Mr. Ward, no, none; absent, Mr. Blair, Mr. Lowden.

LEAVE O F ABSENCE FOR PROFESSOR T. E. SAVAGE

(14) A recommendation that the Board grant the request of Professor T. E. Savage of the Department of Geology, approved by Chairman Quirke of that Department and by Dean Babcock, for leave of absence for the University year 1920-21, his salary during his absence to be monthly one-half of the monthly salary which he received last year; but the payment of this monthly half salary shall not begin until February 1, 1921, and shall continue until September 1, 1921. This proposal in in accordance with our rules. However, Professor Savage, since he applied for leave of absence, has been asked by the Secretary of the Navy to go to Alaska to do work for the Navy Alaskan Coal Commission in connection with certain coal deposits in Alaska. This work will occupy Professor Savage through December and will be paid for by the Government.

This recommendation was adopted.

CAMPUS PLANS

At this point, at 1 p. m., the Board took a recess for luncheon. During the recess, Mrs. Blake made a report of progress on the study of the campus plan, and introduced Mr. Holabird, who presented and explained a sketch of the proposed plan. In this connection, President Carr reported for record that Mr. Edward L. Ryerson, of Chicago, Mr. Robert Allerton,ofMonticello, and Dr. Edmund J.
