UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

579 September 29, 1919

Acting President Kinky

M Y DEAR DEAN KINLEY:

I spoke to you a few days ago about the possibility of remitting the incidental fees of Jean LeGall, a graduate student in chemistry, sent to this University oh one of the fellowships raised by the American Army students in France in gratitude to the French government for having opened the French Universities to our men. Owing to the present rate of exchange, the actual amount received by Mr. LeGall is much less than was anticipated when the money was raised; and for this reason, as well as for the purpose of showing our appreciation of the act of international courtesy performed by the American Army students, I very much hope that this fee may be remitted. Professor Noyes, for the Chemistry Department, joins me in suggesting this, and in asking that the matter be taken up with Mr. McConn in order that Mr. LeGall's position may be defined. I understood you to say that this would be possible, and I send this memorandum to recall the circumstances to your mind. Very truly yours,

KENNETH M C K E N Z I E

This recommendation was approved.

LOAN OF PICTURE BY FRED C. LANDEFELD (30) A statement that Mr. Fred C. Landefeld of Erie, Pennsylvania, had on exhibit in the Albright Gallery in Buffalo last summer, a picture representing the graves of American soldiers in France. This picture was painted on the inspiration of a poem written by Ray Gauger, a student of this University. Mr. Landefeld offered the loan of the picture here, and his offer was accepted.

The Secretary was instructed to express the thanks of the Board to Mr. Landefeld.

REPORT ON FIELD A R T I L L E Y STABLE (31) A report from the Supervising Architect. October 2, 1919 Acting President David Kinky, 355 Administration

DEAR S I R :

Bldg.

We are progressing very well with our Field Artillery stable, and will be able to make it a habitable unit within the approriation of $25,000.00 including the large amount of grading involved. The expense of grading, sewers, and water main extension is so heavy that we will not be able to finish the building as we would like to do at this time. We shall omit the stucco on the walls, and omit the tile roof, using a composition roof over which the tile will be laid at some future date, and heavy paper on the walls over which the stuccoing will be done, as funds can be made available. This work should be done as soon as possible but can be deferred six years. Very truly yours,

JAMES M. W H I T E

Supervising Architect

This report was received for record. , STATEMENT OF INCOME AND EXPENSES, ILLINI HALL

(32) A statement from the Comptroller showing the income, and expenses of Illini Hall (the Y. M. C. A.) from July 1 to August 31, 1919.
