NEW LIBRARY B U I L D I N G (2) A communication from the Supervising Architect relating to the Library. President E. J. James> 355 Administration Building

DEAR SIR:

I enclose a memorandum showing the capacity of the book stacks in the plan which I showed you for the first section of the Library. I have made an approximate estimate of $500,000 on the cost of this unit, exclusive of book stacks. The stack capacity for the basement, first, and second floors would be 806,000 volumes. This would leave the entire third floor free for museum purposes. Yours truly

Total .....1239^ " " Allowing seven and one-half (7}4) books per lineal foot of shelf, a double stack two decks high will contain 210 books per lineal foot, or 260,295 volumes in 1,239^ feet. In the basement and on the upper floors there are sixty more lineal feet of double deck stacks than on the first floor, which will increase the capacity 12,600 volumes, on each of these floors. On the top floor under the roof, there is height for three decks so that the capacity of the first section of the Library would be as follows: Basement 272,895 volumes First Floor 260,295 Second " 272,895 Third " 409,342 Which gives us a total of 1,215,427 "

On motion of Mrs. Busey, the sum of $166,100 was appropriated toward the construction of the first unit of the new Library Building.
