BOARD OF TRUSTEES AUTOMOBILE SHOW

[March 11

(1) A request from the automobile dealers of Champaign and Urbana for permission to use the Gymnasium Annex for an automobile show on March 20-21, 1919.

On motion of Mr. Trimble, this matter was referred to the President of the University, with power to act.

PROPOSED PURCHASE OF TRINITY CHURCH (2) A letter signed by Dean Charters, Professor J. A. Stevenson, and Doctor Buckingham, suggesting that the Trinity Methodist Church Building immediately opposite the School of Education Building be purchased for use an auditorium for the Coollege of Education. M Y DEAR PRESIDENT JAMES:

We have gone carefully over the Trinity Methodist church building proposition and wish to recommend that the property be acquired by the University, primarily for use as an auditorium for the high school. In this connection we recommend strongly that the organ be purchased with the building but that the memorial windows be retained by the present owners. The building, as you know, contains an auditorium and a basement. auditorium can be used by the high school in the following ways: a. Daily use will be made of it for high school assemblies: The

b. Daily use can be made of it for instruction of high school students in music, public speaking, and dramatics; c. It can also be used as a lecture room for some of the larger classes in education; d. Occasional use can be made of it for the teacher's gatherings which center around the University, such as the High School Conference, the State Association of School Board Members, the East Central Division of the State Teachers' Association, public meetings of the Parent-Teacher Associations, public lectures provided by the School of Education, etc. The basement, which is fairly well lighted, can be used by the girls of the University high school as a gymnasium and as a place for instruction in hygiene, corrective gymnastics, etc. This use is quite important because of the fact that the women's gymnasium of the University is so far removed from the high school building. The auditorium can be used for University assemblies. The seating capacity of the Auditorium is approximately five hundred which is about the size of Morrow Hall, and I understand that the demand for auditoriums the size of Morrow Hall for general University purposes is much greater than can be supplied. In addition to this use of the auditorium by the high school for instructional purposes, and by the University for assemblies, it can very well be used by the School
