BOARD OF TRUSTEES

MATTERS SUBMITTED BY THE SUPERVISING ARCHITECT

On request of the President of the University, the Supervising Architect was heard on the following matters:

S. A. T. C. BARRACKS IN CHICAGO (1) The question of barracks for the students in the College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, and School of Pharmacy: Professor White recommended very strongly that the building known as the Ashland Auditorium at the northwest corner of Ashland boulevard and Van Buren street be hired by the University for the purpose of barracking the members of the S. A. T. C. in these schools. He presented a proposed lease which the owners of the building, William Quinlan, William Taber, Coe W. Mills, Maurice Linch, John McLain, Trustees of Division 241 of the Amalgamated Association of street and electric railway employees of America, prepared; and also a modified draft made by Judge Harker, with the recommendation that the Comptroller be authorized to sign this contract on behalf of the Trustees.

On motion of Mr. Hoit, the Comptroller was given authority to sign such contract after being approved by Judge Harker and President Abbott.

USE OF EDUCATION BUILDING FOR HOSPITAL (2) A plan for converting the Education Building into the Students' Army Training Corps and the School of other students of the University, the proposal being to as possible and fit it up for use as a general University war. a general hospital building for Military Aeronautics and the complete the building as soon hospital until the close of the

After full discussion, no action was taken.

EIGHT-HOUR DAY FOR JANITORS (3) Certain recommendations from the Janitors' Protective Union in regard to the definite acceptance of an eight-hour day and certain increases in salary and wages.

The Supervising Architect was given authority to adjust this matter on the best terms he could, subject to the approval of President Abbott.

MEZZANINE IN BOILER HOUSE (4) A recommendation that a mezzanine floor be put into the north half of the old Boiler building and that space on this floor be assigned to the School of Military Aeronautics for instructional work in Machines and Gunnery and that the floor of the Boiler building be used to house the various automobiles owned by the University and the School. The Supervising Architect stated that the University had a sufficient amount of lumber to complete this mezzanine floor without additional expense for material.

The Supervising Architect was authorized to construct such a floor.
