emption from the draft. In answer to rumors concerning his undue urgency in having his claim granted, I have a letter from Judge W. G. Spurgin, who was a member of the local exemption board, to the effect that in his opinion as chairman of the Board at no time were Dr. Rudwin's means or methods unfair. I have also a certified copy of a letter from the Adjutant General of the state of Illinois to the effect that the registrar tion of Dr. Rudwin under the provisions of the Act approved May 18,. I917, is declared to be an error and that the exemption board was instructed to cancel this registration and amend all lists accordingly. This report w a s received for record. A t this point, M r . Trimble withdrew and, t h e absence of a. quorum having been noted, t h e Board adjourned.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING DECEMBER 11, 1917 A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois was held at Hotel La Salle, in Chicago,, on Tuesday, December 11, 1917, immediately following the adjournment of the meeting of the Board on the same day. Mr. W. L. Abbott, Chairman, and Mr. R. F. Carr, member of the Committee, were present; also, Mrs. Laura B* Evans, Mr. J. E. Taggart, Mr. R. R. Ward, and Miss Florence E. Watson,, members of the Board. President James was present.

MATTERS S U B M I T T E D BY PRESIDENT JAMES

The Executive Committee considered the following matters submitted by the President of the University:

TRAFFIC CLERK IN BUSINESS OFFICE

(1) A request from the Comptroller that a traffic clerk be employed in* the Purchasing Office at a beginning salary not to exceed $1100. This person must be a man who has had experience with freight and traffic work. On (motion of Mr. Carr, the President was authorized to appoint such a clerk.

(2) A recommendation that the President of the University be given authority to appoint a University War Committee, consisting of members of the University, for the purpose of coordinating and energizing our war activities, which have taken on a wide range, involving the raising of large sums of money for various purposes; the proper placing of our students and alumni where they can do the best service for the Government; and
